A bulky insect - Un insecto voluminoso.

I was on the roof of my house and on a tree growing in a colliding terrain known as "Manila tamarind" (Pithecellobium dulce), and about which I have written, I saw several insects of the order Hemiptera, family Coreidae.

Me encontraba en el techo de mi casa y en un árbol que crece en un terreno colidante conocido como "yacure" (Pithecellobium dulce), y sobre el cual he escrito, vi varios insectos del orden Hemiptera, familia Coreidae.

Immediately, I looked for some instrument that would be useful to me to make the insect perch so that I could photograph it closely, I managed to get one to perch but I could only capture the following photograph, since it then flew away.

Inmediatamente, busqué algún instrumento que me fuera útil para hacer que el insecto se posara para poder fotografiarlo de cerca, logré que uno se posara pero solo pude capturarle la siguiente fotografía, ya que seguidamente se fue volando.

I continued trying to get others to perch, most of them perched, but when I brought them closer to me they flew away and perched nearby; I photographed one of them on a brick.

Continué tratando que otros se posaran, la mayoría se posaron, pero cuando los acercaba hacia mi se iban volando y se posaban en las cercanías; a uno lo fotografié en un ladrillo.

Finally, most of the remaining insects were farther away, so I decided to change the instrument and used a long wooden stick. With that stick I also managed to get one insect to perch and was able to capture more close-up photos.

Finalmente, la mayoría de los insectos que quedaban se encontraban más lejos, opté por cambiar de instrumento y utilicé una vara larga de madera. Con esa vara también logré que un insecto se posara y pude capturar más fotos de cerca.

Within the family Coreidae is the tribe Nematopodini, which is a tribe that includes bulky insects and the bulkiest ones belong to the genera Thasus and Pachylis. The species I photographed corresponds to Pachylis laticornis. It is a species with a wide distribution range, originally described for French Guyana and later for Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, British Guyana, Mexico, Suriname and Venezuela. Males of this species can measure approximately 26 to 30 millimeters and females similarly between 25 and 30 millimeters.

Dentro de la familia Coreidae se ubica la tribu Nematopodini, que es una tribu que incluye insectos voluminosos y los más voluminosos pertenecen a los géneros Thasus and Pachylis. La especie que fotografié corresponde a Pachylis laticornis. Es una especie de amplio rango distribucional, originalmente fue descrita para la Guyana Francesa y posteriormente, para Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana Británica, México, Surinam y Venezuela. Los machos de esta especie pueden medir aproximadamente entre 26 y 30 milímetros y las hembras similarmente entre 25 y 30 milímetros.

The species in the following photograph is a male and is distinguished by the thickened posterior femurs, unlike the females in which they are not so thickened (I will repeat the second photograph below to show the difference). The thickened femurs are an adaptation believed to aid in territory defense and harem maintenance by males of other coreids. Field observations suggest that this species mates in groups consisting of one male with one or more females. Males mate successively with the females of the group, often remaining in one place for several days, while females move more frequently between groups.

La especie en la siguiente fotografía es un macho y se distingue por los fémures posteriores engrosados, a diferencia de las hembras en las cuales no son tan engrosados (seguidamente repito la segunda fotografía para que se aprecie la diferencia). Los fémures engrosados son una adaptación que se cree ayuda a la defensa de los territorios y al mantenimiento del harén por parte de los machos de otros coreidos. Las observaciones de campo sugieren que esta especie se aparea en grupos formados por un macho con una o más hembras. Los machos se aparean sucesivamente con las hembras del grupo, permaneciendo a menudo en un sitio durante varios días, mientras que las hembras se mueven con más frecuencia entre los grupos.

Notably, in addition to the presumably defensive metathoracic exocrine glands that occur in both sexes of this species, adult males also possess a ventral abdominal gland that releases volatile compounds, mainly esters, that are distinct from the aromatic alcohol-dominated secretions of other coreids, and it is speculated that the esters produced in that ventral abdominal gland constitute some type of attractant pheromone. Alternatively or simultaneously, the secretion could serve as a territorial marker or as a mating stimulant during courtship.

Cabe destacar, que además de las glándulas exocrinas metatorácicas, presumiblemente defensivas, que se dan en ambos sexos de esta especie, los machos adultos también poseen una glándula abdominal ventral que libera compuestos volátiles, principalmente ésteres, que son distintos a las secreciones dominadas por alcoholes aromáticos de otros coreidos, y se especula que los ésteres producidos en esa glándula abdominal ventral constituye algún tipo de feromona atrayente. Alternativa o simultáneamente, la secreción podría servir como marcador territorial o como estimulante del apareamiento durante el cortejo.

In males and females, another distinguishing feature is their two-colored antennal segments. Note in the photographs that one of the segments is somewhat dilated and is bicolored.

En machos y hembras, otra característica que los distingue son sus artejos antenales o segmentos de las antenas que son de dos colores. Nótese en las fotografías, que uno de los artejos está algo dilatado y es bicolor.

There is a strong association between the tribe Nematopodini and plant species of the family Fabaceae, and it has been sufficiently documented that insects of the species Pachylis laticornis frequently use as host plants of the genus Pithecellobium, which is the genus of the plant on which I found them. In these plants, these insects have a preference for vegetative structures, especially new shoots, although they can also use pods for feeding.

Entre la tribu Nematopodini y especies vegetales de la familia Fabaceae existe una fuerte asociación, y ha sido suficientemente documentado que insectos de la especie Pachylis laticornis, frecuentemente utilizan como hospedero plantas del género Pithecellobium, que es el género de la planta en la que los encontré. En esas plantas, estos insectos tienen preferencias por estructuras vegetativas, especialmente los brotes nuevos, aunque también pueden utilizar las vainas para alimentarse.

They have also shown feeding preference for species of the genus Enterolobium (Fabaceae), and the nymphs form spectacular aggregations to feed on twigs of the host plant and seem to be able to complete their development with a diet based solely on phloem.

También han mostrado preferencia alimentaria por especies del género Enterolobium (Fabaceae), y las ninfas forman espectaculares agregaciones para alimentarse en ramitas de la planta huésped y parece que son capaces de completar su desarrollo con una dieta basada únicamente en el floema.
