While encounters with aggressive wild animals in the wilderness are rare, it's good to have something on you at all times which can be used to defend yourself.

Hope I never find out!
I heard a wildlife photographer say the surefire way to never see any wild animals, and especially the big dramatic predators, is to carry an expensive camera with a big lens into the woods. The critters will vacate the area for miles.
I do need to get some bear spray though. It's cheaper than a camera, and while I do carry a gun, I'd prefer to have other options as well.
Is it because the animals are scared of the big strange object, or is he making a joke about how it seems harder to find animals when you've invested a lot of money?
I think it's the capricious nature of wildlife. They cavort for people with cheap phone cameras, and hide from the pros.
