FAMILY BONDS

Family bonds are sustained means through which families keep their relationship strong every day. This kind of relationship does not happen overnight. It comes through weeks, days, months, and years of a persistent relationship with each family member.

Growing up, we ate together, my parents also ate together, and we all stayed at the dining table. During that period, we have time to eat. Again, my dad made it a must that we be home by 7 pm, except in situations that are beyond our control. At that time, we were living in the southeastern region of my country.

Furthermore, we prayed together. That again has its level of bonding because we have a schedule through which every member of the family takes their turn in leading the family prayer altar. We also play games together as a family, such as Ludo, What, and Nyo. Saturdays are our game days. However, before we embark on such a game, we must ensure that we have completed our house chores. Without this confirmation, my mum will not allow any game.

Again, my parents take us out for shopping and family time, especially during children's days and other festive periods. This kind of bonding builds self-esteem, confidence, and exposure. It also builds emotional intelligence for all the family members. This is because, as we interact, we learn from each other and become better together through intentional living and support for each family member.

When love radiates in the family, it translates into a happy mood that boosts energy, optimism, and the ability to take bold steps. I remember when one of my siblings suddenly started lagging in school, my parents showed support by closely monitoring and encouraging her. This also includes counseling and praying with her. Not long after, her confidence was restored through persistent engagement. She regained her balance and started doing well. She passed all her internal and external exams.

Conversely, where there is a lack of family bonding, success is stalled, there is always tension, competition, and a winner-takes-all mindset. This, in the end, finds a way into society, and probably such people from such homes, when they get into leadership roles, will not perform well. This is because they cannot give what they lack.

In conclusion, family bond is an intentional act of consistently living, trusting, understanding, and sharing experiences and values, which can only happen through persistent unity, love, and understanding among family members.
