EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Hello #scifimultiverse friends, I trust your week is going well. Emotional intelligence is my Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) competency.

Employee Engagement Session

It can be defined as the ability to recognise and understand one's own and others' emotions, manage them, and make decisions that impact people by applying this skill. It has become one of the most sought-after skills during recruitment. Individuals are covertly tested on this skill, and oftentimes, they fail even when they claim to have it.

We once tested a set of candidates by asking them to wait for a few minutes after their assessment. Though the wait became long, we wanted to test their ability to work long hours when duty calls. We watched them from the control room. Three of them left without informing us. Two waited and kept themselves busy with Newspapers and Magazines in the reception hall. The two of them were invited to the final stage and were interviewed. One of them made it.

Emotional intelligence is a great managerial tool. It offers self-awareness management, motivation, empathy, and the ability to socialise. Several times, I want to meet with my boss for important discussions, but once I notice that he is not in the right mood for such conversations, I will shift it to a later date. If I continue with the meeting, it won’t be effective.

Strategic Meeting

Furthermore, my job role motivated me to obtain training on emotional intelligence. Since then, my managerial competencies have improved. Today, I communicate clearly, make good decisions, and seek clarity where and when needed. I don’t find it difficult to read people’s moods and apply competencies to resolve disputes amicably.

For an individual to manage others' emotions, they need to be aware of their own emotional state, what they may and may not tolerate. Again, being aware of their emotional state will enable them to manage others and speak authoritatively and calmly in their different state of mind. It requires a lot of strategy and ability to make smart moves, stepping down to an individual’s level of understanding and language, and stepping up when needed.

Furthermore, being open-minded and flexible to understand others' low and high moments. Empathising with their situations, celebrating their little wins, paying attention to their whys, and showing support when needed are attributes of self-awareness. It can also be called self-mirroring.

However, these things start with the individual; one cannot give what they don’t have. Therefore, for one to understand and give emotional intelligence support to others, there must be clear self-awareness, without which it may become a right step in the wrong direction.
