We Are The Major Cause of Water Pollution Affecting Millions of Lives

According to the United nation, access to clean water is a human right but there are a lot of people living in different parts of the world. It might sound like a simple talk but about 1,200 children under the age of five year die from diarrhea each day, and 800 out of these 1200 death are linked to poor water, hygiene, and sanitation.

Water is one thing we cannot do without as we use it as a cleaning agent, cleaning our home, our dishes, and even our personal body. Unless you are not on our planet, you need water daily and like myself, when I woke this morning, I had a glass of water, brush my teeth and rinsed with water, had my bath and that was a combination of water and soap. When using the loo, I used water to flush so the waste can be carried away and this are just a few of the things I use water for. In all of these things I mentioned, water is very important in replenishing my body with liquid, cleaning my environment, and cleaning my body as well.

For the body to perform at optimum, men needs to drink about 3.7 liters per day for men and 2.7 liters per day for women. The body itself is made up of 70% water and our blood is made up of 80% water, and the human brain itself is made of 85% water. In the body, water serves as lubricant, forms the saliva, fluid around joints, it also helps to cool the body during the process of perspiration. not forgetting, it is a very good detox agent, it helps carry food to the stomach, and it also regulates metabolism.

We can tell that water is very important but when clean water is not available, the only water available is consumed since people will always follow the phrase "when the needful is not available, the available becomes the needful". People who live in areas with poor hygiene see water as a solvent that dilutes their feces and also takes it away but the dilution happens when the feces is small but we have made this an habit not taking into cognizance that the water we have on our earth doesn't increase, it either reduces or remain the same and this is why we have the water cycle because water creation is repeated and same.

With increased population, it has become difficult for water to dilute waste especially in rural or industrial areas but then water carries the waste from where it was polluted to another place where people suffer from the pollution. A lot of people in this area where polluted waters are located would want to perform good hygiene but they will have to use the water along with the waste and this can lead to diseases.

Asides disease, water pollution also have effect on the environment and aquatic life. It has reached frightening levels even though there is a lot of effort to treat and clean it. Chemicals used in farms and industries make their way to water thereby causing the growth of algae leading to algal bloom which causes reduction in oxygen level in water leading to dead zone creation where aquatic life dies. While humans are being affected, aquatic lives and the environment is affected.
