Vasectomy Surgery: A Reliable Family Planning Option

avatar

Story time!!! Are you ready to read? That sounded weird but I just had to say it. That said, the normal Nigerian family in the past would have up to 12 children. When I say past, I am talking of less than a century ago, and people still do so till date. A friend of mine says his grandmother had 14 children for his grandfather and it was a polygamous family where his father had 4 wives in total and 41 children.

In other not to have lots of children like his father, and to be able to have a level ground for his children to start a life financially, he opted for family planning. When I mentioned family planning, I want to guess that you mind went to Post-pills, IUD, and Using Condoms. But it looks like these methods are focused on the woman more than the man and funny enough they aren't hundred percent safe. I could say 100% is on the high, but they aren't as safe as preventing pregnancy as you would think.

For my friend, He decided to undergo a more safer option which is Vasectomy. Before you start to look at Nigerian parents and why they had lots of children in the past, it was because they needed an insurance mechanism that they would have children that would survive them since children died young at the time due to lack of proper medical care and education.

With Vasectomy, the vas deferens is cut and sealed. The Vas deferens is a tubes that collects sperm from the testicles and carry it to the urethra. Unlike the believe of many people I have come across where they talk about losing their genital organs completely or the process affecting their coital pleasure, this isn't true. No genital is being removed, also it doesn't affect the erection neither does it affect ability to function in the inner room. This surgery although minor is almost irreversible or little chance of having a child after the surgery but even after the surgery, you still need to use a contraceptive until you have done a follow-up semen analysis to confirm the absence of sperm.

I mentioned almost irreversible because scientist have been able to do vasectomy reversal. This is a micro-surgical procedure, and in this procedure tiny sutures are used to reverse the vasectomy by making one of two types of connections. One will be to reconnect the Vas deferens, or another type of connection that has to do with connecting the Vas deferens to the epididymis which is a structure behind the testicle responsible for sperm. If a person has had the procedure less than 10 years, there is a 99% success rate with the re-connection of vas deferens and the ability to ejaculate but if the vasectomy was done over 10 years ago, then the second type of connection which has to do with the epididymis will be needed which is a little complicated.

While vasectomies offer a highly effective means of family planning for men, it's crucial to understand the implications fully. In this part of the world that I am, it is very rare to find men who are willing to undergo vasectomy. Although, it provides a permanent solution to preventing unwanted pregnancies, and allowing families to plan their future better, it looks like it is more of a cultural thing here. However, anyone considering this procedure should be aware of the long-term commitment and the complexity involved in reversing it. Before going for a procedure, go to your doctor and have a open and sincere conversation. With proper understanding and medical advice, vasectomies can be a responsible choice for those looking to take control of their reproductive health.

Greetings 👏🏻 Interesting and very informative article, I think that the phase of vasectomy as a contraceptive method should be in a more social and cultural level, due to the amount of beliefs and cultural barriers that exist, to sensitize the population, especially the cost and benefits it offers for family planning.
