Astrology vs Astronomy

This is one of those topics that every "science" minded person thinks is settled. And every woo woo person "knows" the opposite.

And the truth is not somewhere in the middle.

Further, Christians are fully against astrology! Which is strange, because their "The Book" is an astrology guide. You need to know astrology in order to understand a great deal of what is being said.

Astrology is a LOT more mathematical than most woo woo people can deal with.
And Astronomy is a LOT less scientific than any of its adherents would want to admit.

So what is the truth? (truth? strange word to use here)

Scientists go to disprove Astrology…

Here is one of the most unusual things i have seen in my adventures. Most of the really good astrology chart readers, were former scientists.

Astrology has a mathematical elegance that totally sucks in the inquisitive mind. And its depth is unfathomable. So, if you aren't of closed mind, and/or only see the consumerist top layer of "spiritual shop" astrology, then most will get sucked in.

The patterns of the planet's movements and their interactions are glorious to watch. And the houses and the planets and the zodiac signs all play off each other.

And then the interpretation of these aspects into guides for daily lives… It is an art form, but more than that, it is actual application of the science, whereas science rarely has real world application. (the stars are pretty, but what has astronomy given us that helps our daily lives?)

Astronomy, not as scientific as you think

We think that astronomy is a pure science. All mathematics and accurate measurements. However, it is anything but.

We are trained to think that ancient people are stupid for believing the sun went around the earth, and that astrology is a bunch of superstition.

However, the reality is very different.

The assumptions in the field of astronomy are only assumptions.

  • Red shift - stars are moving away if shifted red, and towards us if shifted blue. But this is just taking at face value someone's theory. The theory is actually mathematically week, and can't stand much scrutiny.
  • Stars fill the sky and continue on further than we can see. We have a sorta belief that stars are randomly placed throughout the sky. But, when some started putting stars into a 3D model, they find they clump together in paths.
  • Gravity holds it all together, and "black holes" are at the center of galaxies. Except Vera Rubin discovered that galaxies spin all together, as if all the stars were glued to a plate. And so, now we dark matter and dark energy, and a lot of it, to make our formulas balance out.
  • Planets go around the sun. If this were the case, we would have a mathematical formula for describing where a planet is. But we do not seem to have such, we still use tables of planet positions, because the formulas just do not quite work. (even in programs, they look up the position and extrapolate between looked up data points)

The theories of astrology are off. Waaay off. But we hang onto them for dear life.

Astrology really isn't very scientific.
And worse, the images they show us are all doctored.

Astrology is a 5000 year old science

It is very interesting to note that astronomy is a very recent invention.

We have writing going waaaaayy back that discuss astrology, or astrological significant events. The Bible is filled with astrology. (Bethlehem = The house of bread = The sign of Virgo)

If you map out the paths of the planets (from earth), they form beautiful flower patterns. The rhythms are hypnotic. But, if you map them out from a sun centric, they are boring ellipses. But if you map them out from a moving sun, they form interesting spirals. (all of these things we should know, and ponder upon, and then explore. Instead, Astronomy wants to exclude all but the boring, getting rid of all meaning)

It is said that man's destiny is written in the stars, and if this is so, we should be studying the patterns with all our attention we can spare.

Instead we look at the stars and planets as lifeless bodies that have no meaning. Look how much they have taken from us. Astronomy has a lot to answer for.

All this say that Astrology is a 5000 year old science, and Astronomy is a 500 year old psuedo-science

In science the goal is to reduce a seemingly complex mess of data into a constant and a formula, making it simple to understand and predict. I guess it has only approached making things predictable, like in the case of the weather models. Finding unknown forces is humbling and intriguing. Since no theory explains everything, we should pragmatically look at the ones that are closest and keep an open mind when new data is available.
