Trust the Experts : A Setup for AI to Rule?

avatar

We’ve all heard this appeal from Authority figures over the last few years that we should Trust The Experts. Don’t do your own research, don’t think for yourself because that’s dangerous. You are not a doctor or a scientist so who are you to decide what is the right thing to do? That’s why we have experts right? People who spend their entire careers figuring out what is best for us. We should be able to trust them...except sometimes they are wrong. The big question I have for those who believe we all should Trust The Experts is – What if the Expert is an Artificial Intelligence?

For some time now there have been different types of Artificial Intelligences being developed. One type is actually called an Expert System which is designed to absorb all the information available on a specific topic and become an Expert in that subject. So in many ways we have already arrived at the point where we have these AI Experts in existence today. Should we trust them? Well, yes, experts make mistakes but maybe the AI is less likely to make mistakes than humans are....

its-a-trap.jpg

Where does this road take us though? If we don’t already we are very soon going to have AI Experts who can make better decisions than Humans. If we are all just blindly Trusting The Experts then doesn’t that mean that inevitably AI Experts are going to be making all the decisions and humanity has effectively clocked off? Humans made redundant as a form of intelligence and just consigned to the dustbin of history?

Call me a Luddite or even a Conspiracy Theorist if you will, but I prefer making my own decisions – even if it means I make a few mistakes. This is how humanity has been for millennia. We muddle along and we figure things out through a bit of trial and error. Sometimes we think we’ve made a mistake but it turns out to be a stroke of genius or an accidental discovery. I’m happy to work with AI but I'm not ready to let go that thing that makes us human so Screw The Experts because I will continue to think and Trust Myself until the day I die.

Hi @buggedout
Very well explained how AI is going to help us. The good thing about AI is that it keeps on learning and becoming better than us in anything. I believe this way we can say that trust the experts because its better than us.

AI is doing well and even getting better with each passing day so its a good option to rely on. This will improve even more and we can call the AI, an expert for better research and advice.

In my opinion it all depends on how people will use these tools. Already today there are those who use Google as an oracle and already in the past there were those who based everything on stories and legends. I try to look at the glass half full: maybe thanks to the existence of AI many people will learn to be more human 😅

The main question is how AI collect the data? The sources are still the human who discovered, published, researched the data.

I find chat-gpt useful for coding snippets, even though it makes things up a lot. Haven't used it for much else.

This is really going to make a big impact in the future with AI making those changes.

The important question is: who is training these AI experts? The answer to this question will say a lot about the expertise...

Yes, this is going to be really important. Some sources of data (opinion) are considered reliable while others are discounted. All the more reason why I am unlikely to Trust the Expert AIs - I expect bias.

I think it will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. Even when people put safeguards in place, it is often those times that things go even further off the rails. It kind of reminds me of when I am getting ready for work in the morning and my wife is still sleeping. The more I try to be quiet, the more noise I end up making.

there are also risks associated with AI. AIs could be used to create autonomous weapons that could kill without human intervention. They could also be used to create surveillance systems that could track our every move.

But I believe that the benefits of AI outweigh the risks. We just need to be careful about how we develop and use AI. We need to make sure that AI is used for good, not for evil.

I believe that we need to find a balance between trusting experts and thinking for ourselves. We should be open to hearing what experts have to say, but we should also be willing to question their advice. We should also be willing to learn from our own experiences and make our own decisions.

Well said. AI combined with Robots in a military or policing function is incredibly dangerous. I guess that's the theme for my posts on AI - It's useful, but we can't stop thinking for ourselves or we're toast.

By the way we had seen that the previous one which was virgin was not responding at all same happened to my friends but now this one came it is much better than the first one and a lot of people are using it and it is proving to be very helpful for a lot of students.

I’m not a fan of AI at all. I grew up when computers became mainstream and killed the work force. This is going to be much worse when it becomes mainstream. I was born with a brain to make my own decisions, I don’t need AI.

You're one guy I'm not worried about at all. You got balls AND brains. Really good combination to have in these crazy times.

I’d like to think so. I’m no fool at least. Trying to up my gold holdings before the price blows up. It’s hard saving for gold.

I trust my own decisions and research, most of the so called "experts" are complete and utter morons. To be become an "expert" all you really need is a diploma (from Micky Mouse U.) and be loud enough that people listen to you. You are right, you gotta think for yourself!

You're not wrong. Many of today experts are self proclaimed and we have these bureaucrats with a "Dr" before their name who have never practiced medicine a day in their lives. They just have a PhD in Public Health Administration. They are certainly no experts!
