Let There Be Light!

For over the past one or two weeks now, there has been a remarkable improvement in the power sector that has had a lot of people smiling. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but here in Owerri where I’m based, there has been steady light for quite some time now.

There was a time I talked about the administration of the new president and how he fulfilled his promise of hitting the ground running by signing off a lot of things into law just within the first few days of his gaining office. Well, one of the laws he signed was granting States the power to generate, transmit and distribute power. As it is, each state government has the power to decide the power dynamics, if they want to be in charge or they want to privatize it, everything will be at their sole discretion.

This will take off the load from the federal government and also cut everything up to size so that each state will simply handle the amount they can handle. Each state will have its own electricity market, and as you know, there will always be competition that might improve the epileptic power system we’ve been suffering in this country for decades.

So now, could this be the reason for the better treatment? Note that the tariff for electricity has also gone up by 40%, which means more money for the lot of us to pay. But if they keep the light coming, paying it would not be a problem in any way.

If after all, this is a result of the Electric Power Act signed into law just this month, then I have to say this; we’re off to a great start and things look better because for a while now they have looked really bleak for a lot of us.

From the rising cost of fuel that led to the rising standard of living, keeping up with inflation has been a full-time job on its own. And now, thanks to the floating of the naira that will be starting next month, it’s going to get even worse. The price of petrol will get even higher, and its effects on other goods and services will be felt all over the country. So, having this good light has been really beneficial because all through this while, I’ve not really bothered myself about turning on my generator.

But then, what if I’m only just deceiving myself? Seeing as Imo State is yet to have her Governorship elections, it’s possible that all this is just another tactic to get us on their side so that by the time they get into the seat of power, they easily forget who voted them in.

Honestly, one should never really take what politicians say seriously. it would be sad honestly, if all this turned out to be a ruse and not meant to last at all because these guys were just looking to get some sort of response. Because I just have to say this, I am getting used to this constant light. Thanks to them, I know what it feels like to go day after day without having to listen to the constant drone of generators from your neighbors. I just want it to be this way forever… hehe.

Anyway though, we just have to see how this unfolds and how the coming weeks will be for everyone. And I sincerely hope that things don’t revert to the way they used to be.

That is true. At least, we are having light so we won't need to start thinking about how to buy fuel before we have light

Is every developing country are facing the same situation?

In our country we are facing almost same to same kind of situation and load shedding in current time just irritating. Only magic can help us to come out from the situation otherwise I can't see any possibilities to overcome that situation in a short time.

Here in Pakistan, whenever she comes summer in this way, the light starts going out here as well, as we are now seeing that here in Pakistan there is no light for five hours every day and facing a lot of problems. People have to ask why people can neither afford a generator or anything else.
