I think it can be for anything. Not that I make much from it. I've built up a bit, so I can give a little in votes.
Voting in old posts doesn't do much. Neither does using them on comments with your stake. I would save your votes for posts by other people.
I tend to vote old posts too as it is still dust votes from me but shows as a transaction. I guess I am voting as a like/bookmark equivalent :D Might need to amend that behavior when my vote actually has value.
