Ghosts of Christmas Past
It's interesting how this time of year can really put you in a "mood" if you know what I mean. They say it is "the most wonderful time of the year", but for some reason it often has the effect of putting me in a reflective mood.
It isn't that subtle, casual reminiscing either, it's often some combination of longing, humbleness, and maybe a little regret bashing you over the head like a sledge hammer.
As horrible as that sounds, it isn't really a bad thing, it more specifically just "is". I think part of it has to do with the fact that the new year is right around the corner. There is something about those four digits ticking over on the calendar that really make you take stock of the past 12 months.
Radio stations have already started to play their top 100 songs of whatever countdowns, and invitations have gone out for that big new years party that everyone will be talking about on Tuesday.
I remember the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning and seeing all the presents around the tree. It was a magical feeling watching the toys slowly materialize was each piece of wrapping paper was ripped away.
Then, as I got older, toys turned into more practical things like tools. There was still a bit of magic to it, but somewhere in the back of your head, you knew that this particular holiday was going to be forever changed.
Now, as an adult, I can pretty much buy whatever I want, so even that little bit of magic is faded away.
I think that fallacy in everything I just said lays in the fact that I am assuming that Christmas magic is derived from things. When in fact, the joy of Christmas should really come from somewhere else.
@mrsbozz and I don't have kids, but we get to watch our nieces and nephews open presents each year. I think there is something really special in that. I can't tell you how excited my nephew/godson was when he opened up the silver I got for him.
His eyes lit up like a spotlight when he saw the 2024 1 oz dragon round. I thought he was going to be more excited by the Army piece I got him, but I guess that is just part of the magic of Christmas, never knowing what to expect from children.
I'm sure I will be writing another post before the beginning of the new year, but right now, that is really where my mind is heading. We have a lot of unknowns in front of us and there is going to be a lot of emotions I think.
My hope is that we can all take it in stride and look for the magic even in small amounts wherever we can find it.
I hope you all have a blessed holiday. Thanks for taking the time to read my brief reflection and thanks to @tarazkp for making this great community.

Their is no anything that gives a young kid with a big smile and no other than a Christmas Gift, greetings🤗
Indeed! It can light up a room sometimes!
My thoughts on Christmas has changed too, It's more like here comes the month where everyone spends mostly, and sometimes it stresses me as I look at my wallet. 😅 Life is hard, but I gotta make my kids happy
I don't worry about the money like I used to, but I do enjoy spending time with my family. I've actually seen a bit more of it this year than I normally do, so that is cool.
I hope I'm going that way too, soon. New year is yet coming, I might as well give gifts to family and friends
It's one of my favorite things to do!
This time of the year can put you in the mood of love, happiness and wanting to go out to have fun
It is my favorite time of the year
It can definitely be a magical time! It would have been nice if we had a bit of snow this year. Maybe that is part of my problem!
I think those are fairly common feelings for this time of year. There is something about reflecting on a new year coming that makes us stop and take stock of things. Moreover, it's a reminder that we are aging and that perhaps the number of these that we will see is dwindling. Most folks try to ignore that fact of life most of the year, but New Years kind of shoves it right in our faces. All together, it is a recipe for reflection.
Don't get too lost in the thoughts, and enjoy the holidays. 2024 will be a doozie and we'll be caught up in all the messes to come soon enough. Let's pause and hold on to the holidays while we can.
Thanks for the great words. I have a feeling I will be reading them multiple times over the next couple of days. It's been a great couple of days, but I am definitely realizing that I am starting to have fewer and fewer of these in front of me.
I totally understand what you are feeling. It's a little sad and reflective here too and I feel a bit old and jaded haha.
Tell you what though, the most Christmassy time was watching the last Indiana Jones in the evening, with a bottle of wine. THAT felt a little magical, but Indy does that - a little magic from childhood on the screen I suppose.
I have been meaning to watch that movie, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I am going to need to check it out. Thanks for stopping by and for the great comment!
Do watch it - I promise it will cheer you up 🙏💕
Lovely post, especially as you managed to put in words a lot of emotions I have at this time of year.
Your point on reflection for example, I find myself using that word all the time in this period. I don't know if it is the end of calendar year with everyone auditing the last one, or the fun around Christmas, or the lovely weather and holidays. Whatever it is I end up extremely reflective in this last couple of weeks of the year.
Completely agree about the impact of gifts for us. In our childhood, thanks to tighter wallets, kids got new clothes on their birthdays and for the various festivals like Diwali, Christmas etc. So we used to look forward to the festivals as it was indeed special as people would get a bonus at those times. So even stuff for the home was purchased then. Now with more buying power, as well as ease of ecommerce one can just buy whatever they want all year round and the only gifting left for adults is the funny ones like Secret Santa.
And finally the point around how kids get excited with gifts and how one can never be sure what really brings that gleam in their eyes is spot on.
Great post reflecting a lot of my thoughts. In my case I need to channel some of my learnings in the right direction before next year so that will be my agenda this week. fingers crossed I will be ready for the new year.
Thank you for sharing these thoughts which helped me spend even more time with my own. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your learning opportunities you have coming up. I have to go back to work tomorrow, so things are going to be a bit crazy for me until we get our break for the New Year.
This particular time of the year is to spread love around and positivity
I think the holidays are meant for kids and watching them through a child's eyes. Like you said as an adult I can buy pretty much what ever I want but seeing a kid get so excited is great.
Indeed! Not having our own we have to get little bits and pieces through our nieces and nephews!
The view is very beautiful and this is the benefit of such events, one gets a chance to enjoy life once again and because it is a holiday, they also get time to meet each other.
Yes, getting together with family is one of my favorite parts of this season!
