SEVEN PORTRAITS OF A YOUNG MANTIS

The mantis in quastion is Empusa pennata. A young wingless nymph of that species.

(Enlargeable)

In this opening picture, you can see the young mantis quiet in its typical pose, well camouflaged on the Asparagus acutifolius plant that looks a bit like a piece of green barbed wire. In the following photograph ...

It was a nice, sunny day at the end of May, and I was picking the soft edible asparagus shoots when I noticed the mantis. Asparagus acutifolius produces delicious, very aromatic shoots in spring and a new generation of Empusa pennata can be usually seen in the same period. Young mantises of this kind aren't rare, but they are pretty hard to notice in their natural environment.

In the early stage of their life, Empusa pennata mantises can be very varied. The color can be different from individual to individual. I saw pale, almost white ones. Grey ones. Yellow-brown ones. Chestnut brown, almost red ones. Many young mantises come in a very fashionable combination of pink and olive green. In today's post, I'll show you only the green-brown version.

The adult mantis is also photogenic and interesting, but nymphs are more alien-like. I'm a big fan of this species, so I never get tired of observing them. In the following photograph ...

... the mantis is posing upside down.

AND THAT'S IT. I HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO SAY - NO MORE PICTURES TO SHOW. AS ALWAYS HERE ON HIVE, THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE MY WORK - THE END.

Wow, these photos are absolutely stunning! The nymph Empusa pennata looks absolutely adorable and blends perfectly with Asparagus acutifolius plants - nature's camouflage at its best! It's amazing how well they hide, making it a fun challenge to find them. You really capture the essence of this young praying mantis, and its unique colors and patterns are absolutely dazzling. That upside down pose is too cute! Thank you for sharing these enchanting images and allowing us to admire the wonders of nature. Fantastic work! 😍

The Mantis is a fascinating creature, it hides so well with the colours of surrounding leaves and branches. Almost impossible to see it when it is not moving !LOL

The way we see your pictures everyday you work so hard to make them so close so that we all can see them in a very good way.

Fantastic, curious and lucky find! I never see such a creature alive - even in the zoo. You have an eagle eye. I suspect that mantisses are very hard to find in the grass?

Yes, they are very well camouflaged. I usually notice them when they move.

Recently I found a real firefly! It did not move, but casted some light and was not fast-moving, so did not escaped from me and my camera. 😎

🙂 Do you have some firefly photographs to publish now? That will be interesting to see.

Yes! I put him in a matchbox and shoot in the morning light. But dad had no macro lens with him, so it was a usual capture, not #macro. I will make a blog with the pics.

I did not immediately understand that it was a praying mantis, or a stick insect, I had to use my imagination, you are very observant :)

Very interesting is the way of camouflage, I went through a similar experience at a zoo in Szeged (Hungary), when a keeper was feeding some insects that I couldn't see and at one point he put something like a tree branch on my hand, I didn't care, then he said, you see you have an insect on your hand, what.
