In this opening photograph, you can see a fish from the Labridae family. Labrus merula is the name of the species. I encounter this fish very often while snorkeling. Observing it in the aquarium was kinda strange.

This is the Epinephelus marginatus, a big fish that I saw only a few times while snorkeling. Here in the aquarium, I was able to observe it much better, longer, and in a more relaxed way.

Here you can see a portrait of the Dentex dentex from the large and varied Sparidae family. In the following photograph ...

... you can take a look at the fish in its entirety. This is a species I don't encounter very often, but quite regularly while snorkeling, about a dozen times every summer.

This is the Platichthys flesus, a flatfish with both eyes o the upper surface of the strange, laterally flattened body. I never saw this species while snorkeling.

This is the Trachinus draco, a venomous fish from the Trachinidae family. Its venomous spines can inflict very painful and quite serious injuries to humans. This is a very common fish that I see very often on the sandy seabeds near the shore.

This is the Gobius cruentatus. A very common encounter on my summer underwater ramblings.

It was a gloomy winter day. I drove to the city of Rovinj and spent the entire morning there. Among other things I did on that occasion in Rovinj, I also visited the small aquarium. The aquarium is part of a Center for Sea Research and all the fish there belong to the ecosystems in the Adriatic sea. Most of the fish I saw were the same ones I encounter while snorkeling in the sea during the summer. It was great to see them on a cold winter day, for a change. All that didn't happen recently. In today's post, you'll see seven portraits of local fish from the winter of 2006.

Very powerful looking fish! I hope this one don’t bite or nibble on you! The character seems very strong and like a serious thinking fish. Would people fish this fish for food?

I guess the poisonous one is not safe for dinner! 🙀😂

🙂 Yes, all the fish shown here can be turned into excellent seafood. The one with the poisonous spine is delicious. The meat isn't poisonous. But one must be careful when cleaning the fish and removing the spines. The fish is slippery and an accident can happen easily. A friend that got stung while cleaning the fresh catch on the fishing boat says that it hurts like hell for a week or so, and then you feel a fairly tolerable pain for the rest of the month. If the fish is dead the venom isn't that strong, or it can't be injected in the right dose. I got stung but wasn't nearly as bad. The pain was pretty strong, but only for a day or two, and then slowly disappeared in the next few days.

Ah wonderful trip to see the fishies! I saw a few while snorkeling last week.

My aquarium with South American fish needs a little attention. The plant growth is insane with the increase in daylight hours and I have some pruning to do before I show some pics of that!

Beautiful photos of fish from the Adriatic sea. I love the way you captured their colors and patterns in the aquarium. It's amazing to see how different they look from their natural environment.

I would love to have a "high value" fish tank at home with large tropical fish. However, the quality care and maintenance required is just too much cost for me (unless you simply want Goldfish) !LOL

Although I know very little about marine life, these photos you managed to take look really amazing @borjan. The photos I liked the most were the first and especially the second, I like the latter because it looks great the dark blue of the background in the aquarium, it even looks kind of scary haha. Excellent post @borjan, best regards.

The Platichthys flesus catches my attention, I have never seen a fish like this, it looks strange.
Thanks for sharing the photos from 2006, these fish you may see when you are diving and they may still be in an aquarium, I am telling you this as I thought they may or may not be in the aquarium today.

I myself am very fond of going under water and seeing fish and other special things like that, but I haven't been able to do it yet because of fear.

It's easy to capture these always moving species, but you have done great job.
