Cancer outlook markedly worse in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic

Some alarming reports are in. Diagnoses of six common types of cases are down 46.4%, for example. Not sure how to fully interpret that but I strongly doubt cancer cases have halved. So what's left is an inevitable conclusion that about half of the cases of those common types of cancer went undiagnosed during this time period.

A study of certain cancer outcomes in France discovered that post-lockdown instituted to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic cancer load of colorectal cancer was on average considerably higher. Ssdly, that correlates worse outcomes for the patients and higher mortality. The situation in France and in the US with regard to excess cancer projections is judged to be similar.

To what degree the cause was the COVID-19 response is debatable but it seems to be absurd to deny that healthcare disruptions caused by quarantines and lockdowns were a factor. And we should should not lose sight of the fact that COVID is not the only deadly disease out there that we as a society need to manage - and it is not even all that deadly for the vast majority of the population.

COVID is not the only deadly disease out there that we as a society need to manage - and it is not even all that deadly for the vast majority of the population.

The vaccines are probably more deadly. Especially in long term. We do not even know its long term effects. It is not tested. This is a worldwide human experiment.

You are exactly correct about it being a worldwide experiment.

Best I can tell, mRNA vaccines do lessen the symptoms. Which is irrelevant unless you are old or specifically vulnerable. So if you are 80 y.o., getting it likely makes sense. If you are 30 and healthy, the vaccine itself is likely far more of a threat to you than the COVID-19.

My brother is stuck in hospital waiting for an angiogram. There's a backlog because of covid. He should have had it today but it's been postponed. In the meantime, we can't visit him. During the many lockdowns, it became very apparent that if you had any other illness apart from covid, you went to the back of the queue.

Very sorry to hear that.

During the many lockdowns, it became very apparent that if you had any other illness apart from covid, you went to the back of the queue.

Exactly. Even if what you had was far worse than COVID.

Speedy recovery to your brother!

Well it has hit the healthcare and medical research in many ways. On one hand it was anticipated that overburdening of the healthcare infrastructure would lead to increased morbidity and mortality not just of covid19 patients but also of patients suffering from other ailments such as cancer. Lockdown was never an ultimate solution but it would have definitely helped us in buying time. I mean we tried by nevertheless the pandemic exploded and we saw an overburdened medical infrastructure. On one hand where patients took the hit of overburdened system, on the other hand data is also in on how cancer research funding was affected. Overall, it has been a really grim time.
