New Car Sales in Germany: August 2026 – Electric Vehicles Reach Record Share
In August 2026, Germany registered 212,563 new passenger cars (Pkw), a modest +2.6% increase compared to August 2025, according to the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA).
The standout story was the continued surge in battery electric vehicles (BEVs):
- 68,930 pure electric cars were newly registered
- This equates to a 32.4% market share – a new high and well above the previous year’s 15.6%
- BEV registrations jumped +75.1% year-on-year

For the first time, pure electric cars outsold petrol and diesel cars combined (petrol 16.7%, diesel 10.6%). Hybrids (including plug-in hybrids) still formed the largest single group at 39.8%, of which plug-in hybrids accounted for 12.0%.

Key Takeaways
- Absolute BEV numbers declined slightly from the strong July figure (typical for the holiday month), but the market share rose further as overall volumes fell more sharply.
- Year-to-date (Jan–Aug 2026) BEV registrations stand at over 515,000 units (+53% vs. the same period in 2025).
- Average CO₂ emissions of all new cars dropped to 105.0 g/km.
The data underlines the accelerating shift toward electrification in the German passenger car market, with pure electric vehicles now firmly established as a mainstream choice.

Shows how brainwashed the Germans are. Once the electric power will be rationed, this will be a bad awakening for many.
Currently, there are a few incentives, such as lower taxes for leased vehicles or no tolls for trucks. That will go away.
And I expect to see additional taxes for electricity, similar to ICE cars. Maybe some people will be able to avoid it if they can charge at home (with or without solar panels), but I would also suspect they might add functionality to chargers at home. Gotta collect more taxes because it would be unfair or something.
Yes, in new taxes they are very creative...
