Transporter 18

Transporter missions are rideshare flights offered by SpaceX for small-satellite customers, typically supporting payloads up to 50 kg. SpaceX has indicated it will scale back Falcon 9 operations in the coming years and is no longer accepting new bookings for rideshare missions. This shift may create openings for other providers, such as Rocket Lab, that already serve the small-satellite market.

The upcoming mission is scheduled to deliver 130 payloads to a sun-synchronous orbit.

Data Centers in Space

This flight has drawn attention amid ongoing discussion of data centers in space. Google plans to send four of its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) into orbit to examine the challenges involved. The effort is known as Project Suncatcher.

Key questions the mission aims to address include:

  • Physical stress
  • Radiation
  • Thermal management
  • Solar events
  • Cosmic rays
