Development of BEV Share in the German Vehicle Fleet
The share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Germany’s total vehicle stock has shown consistent growth over recent years, particularly in the passenger car segment.
Passenger Cars
As of 1 July 2026, BEVs accounted for 4.76% of the German passenger car fleet. This represents a steady upward trend:
- 1 January 2026: 4.11%
- 1 January 2025: 3.30%
- 1 January 2024: 2.90%
- 1 January 2023: 2.10%
- 1 January 2022: 1.30%
- 1 January 2021: 0.60%
- 1 January 2020: 0.30%
Growth has been continuous across nearly all observed quarters, with the pace of increase remaining relatively stable in percentage-point terms in recent periods. It looks like adoption speed has increased in the second quarter.
Other Vehicle Segments (as of 1 July 2026)
- Buses: 6.11% BEV share
- Vans: 3.31% BEV share
- Trucks: 0.17% BEV share
All segments have recorded gradual increases in BEV penetration since 2020, though from different base levels. Buses currently show the highest BEV share among the categories listed, while trucks remain at a very low penetration rate. Trucks used to climb by 0,01% per quarter but have accelerated by 0,03% in the second quarter.
Summary
The data indicates a clear, ongoing expansion of battery electric vehicles within the German vehicle stock. Passenger cars, which constitute the largest segment, continue to drive the overall development, with the BEV share surpassing 4% in early 2026 and 5% looking close for the third quarter.
New car BEV quota for May 2026 came in at 26,2%, which is an increase from March 2026 at 25%.
