"Porto de Mos" is part of the "Serra de Aire e Candeeiros" national park, this parish offers unique natural settings that invite you to be discovered, the natural aspect joins in the historical context of the foundation of Portugal as an independent nation at the end of the century XVI; The Porto de Mos region has been occupied for millennia and its name dates back to the stone export activity that took place in these lands for several centuries. Nowadays, limestone is used for the decoration and stone industry. ornamental. (Source: Museum Porto de Mos)🏰🧭🌏

As I read about the history of the castle, I was increasingly moved by all the centuries of history that are within the walls. When you look at a castle, you think that it is a medieval construction, but many times the history dates back to before Christ, for example, it is believed that this castle had its foundation in prehistory due to the archaeological material that was discovered here, there are jugs that date back to civilization: (Romanesque), and of course it could have been the first construction of the Roman town to defend the city and the quarries, since that height was already working with stones (Source: Wikipedia)🚩🌏🚗
I'm a fan of medieval history and archeology... Well, you already know from my post! I loved that the castle has 3 sections intended for the exhibition of historical-archaeological material that was obtained in various excavations in the castle grounds. After the Romans, the castle was modified as a defense structure for the city by the Visigothic civilizations. and arabicas. But it was in the 11th century when the castle would have a potential historical value for the Portuguese troops.🕵️♂️🥽
Iberian conquest🧭🏰🧠/ Conquista iberica🌏🚗
(The history of this castle was remembered by the Portuguese in 1940), nice words! We all know that Portugal was one of the first countries in Europe to be founded as a nation and throughout its history it was known for being a world power, having its greatest peak between the 15th and 16th centuries. In the year (1112-1185) the Christian warlike movement to conquer the warlike peninsula took place and was commanded by Dalfonso, the territory was included up to the Tagus river, Porto de Mos played an important role in the defense of the territories of Coimbra and Leiria, so we think that some battles were fought in the castle in the 11th century🚩🌏🚗
Let's continue with this interesting story after it was conquered by Alfonso in 1148 from the Moors, later other wars were fought in which the Arabs managed to recover the castle again, in the withdrawal the historical character D Fuas assembled his army again and would return to reconquer the castle for the second time but this would be final. Between the years 1185-1211 the town around the castle began to prosper and grow and the castle received some improvements and updates as it was the main defensive point of the village.🚩🧭🌏
First Portuguese village🧭🏰🧠/Primera villa Portuguesa🌏🚗
This is what the city would look like and still looks like from the walls, let's remember that historically a castle was almost always built on the highest points of the cities, usually on hills or mountains, it was important that they have access to a 360 degree view! This village was interesting because it was one of the oldest to last for many generations in the place, as well as being the only Portuguese city to become a municipality of its own free will! this in the thirteenth century🌏🧭🚩
rest of a tombstone🧠🔬
While I was walking through the castle I saw more than 5 structures that looked like a pillar to support the walls but in reality some of them were pieces of tombs dating from the Romanesque era, the constitution was mainly made of calcareous rock that abounds in the area. And of course we see the photo of the entrance to the castle🕵️♂️🚗

Relive history🧭🏰🧠/Revivir la historia🌏🚗
Never but never forget history is part of our identity as a person and country! this castle lived through the earthquake of 1755 and then another one in 1909 the whole structure was compromised enough and was about to fall, however before they built things to last for all eternity and this historical piece survived all the natural disasters and abandonments to finally In the year 1960 it began to be restored until 2001.🧭🌏

Coming to the present in the 20th century the castle is classified as a national monument, there is a combination of architecture in the castle from Gothic to Renaissance, obviously depending on which floor of the castle you are on! I had no luck going to the patio where there is a very beautiful fountain. I had walked 7 km and I was exhausted. I left it for the next time, but I invite you to visit it, it is five stars! you can pay the entrance in cardboard, it has parking, the city of Mos is quite nice.🧭🌏🏰
