Some time ago, I started a new hobby studying wild orchids in Portugal. Last year, I made several posts about species, and I'm happy because in 2026 I got my first specimens of Barlia robertiana or (Himantoglossum robertianum). I discovered a new place I hadn't seen before, which I christened "The Valley of the Barlia" because it's here that they grow in abundance in February.🌏👨🏻🏫
Y este nuevo ano empezo cargado con buenas noticias y post excepcionales en la comunidad de Amazing Nature, estamos bastante orgulloso por los lindos post que nos publican los usuarios de la plataforma, hace un tiempo estaba con un nuevo hobbie de estudiar Orquideas silvestres de Portugal, el ano pasado hice varios post sobre especies, y estoy contento porque en este 2026 consegui mis primeros ejemplares de Barlia robertiana o (Himantoglossum robertianum), descubri un local nuevo que antes no habia visto el cual bautice como "El valle de las Barlia" porque es aqui donde crecen en abundancia en el mes de febrero🚩🍀🌾
Orchids are marvelous species that mimic specific wasps to attract and pollinate those insects. Others simply resemble many flowers to attract a wider variety of insects, and such is the case of our species, which is a spike-type inflorescence. It is also known as the Giant Orchid due to its large size; records show it can reach 90cm, although in most cases it reaches 50cm.🚩👨🏻🏫🌏
Las orquideas son especies maravillos que recrean ser avispas especificas para atraer esos insectos y ser ponilizadas, otras simplemente simulan ser muchas flores para atraer una variedad superior de insectos, y tal es el caso de nuestra especie que es una: inflorescencia de tipo ESPIGA, tambien se le conoce como orquidea Gigante por su gran tamano, hay registros que puede alcanzar los 90cm aunque en casi todos los casos llega a 50cm🫣🌿🌵🌸

It rained a lot in Portugal these past few days, to the point that areas that never have abundant water were transformed into natural pools. This makes it impossible for many orchids to grow, since soils with excess water are not suitable for them. So, my encounter in the valley would be difficult. However, I had some clues. I knew I could see orchids at the foot of the mountain, but I had to differentiate between areas with tall shrubs and vegetation with trees and bushes. This species hardly grows among tall trees.🌏👨🏻🏫
Estos dias llovio mucho en Portugal a tal punto que zonas que nunca tienen agua en abundancia se transformarron en piscinas naturales, esto imposibilita el crecimiento de muchas orquideas ya que suelos con exceso de agua no son los apropiados para ellas, asi que mi encuentro en el valle seria dificil, sin embargo tenia algunas pistas, sabia que podia ver orquideas a "pie" de la montana, pero debia diferenciar entre zonas con arbustos altos y vegetacion con arboles y matorrales, esta especie dificilmente crece entre arboles altos.⛰️🏞️

Studying nature is fantastic, and every time we go into the field we gain experience. It's like any profession; the more you practice, the better you are at detecting a situation. In my case, I can now recognize the Barlia robertiana species by its morphology, height, color, and leaf size. Added to this, and using the description I use with my scientific reference, I end up seeing the species I'm studying with a better overall understanding.🌍📍

Let me introduce you to Agave americana, a succulent that flowers only once in its lifetime and then dies. This species is invasive in Portugal and we find it in this area. It's native to America, and I think it's one of the largest succulents I've ever seen; it must have been about 2 meters or more tall.🌸🌏

And exactly on the site I had mapped in GMAPS I found the land where the Himantoglossum robertianum were growing. They bloom from the end of February until April, which is why some flowers were still growing; they weren't fully mature. In total, I counted more than 8 species in less than 1 km², which is quite interesting and tells us that the land has the physicochemical characteristics for them to grow without disease🌸👨🏻🏫.
Y exactamente en el sitio que habia mapeado en GMAPS consegui el terreno donde estaban las Himantoglossum robertianum ellas florescen en el mes de finales de febrero hasta abril por eso todavia estaban creciendo unas flores, no estaban totalmente maduras, en total conte mas de 8 especies en menos de 1km2 lo que es bastante interesante y nos dice que el terreno tiene las caracteristicas fisicoquimicas para ellas crecer sin enfermedades🌵🌏🌷🌷
