The battle of Aljubarrota (Museum) (En-Es)🧠🔬⚔️

In the year 1385 one of the bloodiest battles of the time was fought in Europe, it was the battle of Aljubarrota where the kingdom of Portugal collided with the army of Castile, it was for me the most important battle in Portugal because it defended its right to be an independent country and avoid being absorbed by its neighbors! The battle is remembered to this day because the Portuguese army only had 7,000 soldiers against 40,000 Castilian troops. In this post I will visit the museum of the battle of Aljubarrota to learn a little more about the key points of this fierce battle and what was Portugal's strategy to defeat the Spanish.🧠⚔️🚩

Science at the service of archeology📚🧠/ La ciencia al servicio de la arqueologia⚔️🚩

Archeology studies the material remains of societies and their interaction with the environment, the production of knowledge with aspects of the economic, social, cultural and biological nature of past populations! requires joint work with other sciences anthropologists from the University of Coimbra studied the bones of the combatants collected at the combat sites and the inhabitants who inhabited the land after the battle, all of which were found in the necropolis of the Temple of Sao Jorge, also the archaeologist zoologists studied the animal bones that were found in the pits and other parts of the battlefield! What was the results?⚔️🚩📚

Many things happened at that time Lisbon and Porto held on to the power of Castile while at the same time the Black Death devastated Europe, all these factors made the Spanish army reach the brink of collapse and asked the French for help, which made the war was divided into two camps (English and Portuguese) against (Castilian and France), with this Castilla alliance was hoping to defeat the kingdom of Portugal. Here we see in this photo decorative objects such as jugs and coins that were unearthed in the Aljubarrota area. I also show you a replica of a weapon that looks like a "mallet" with an iron tip, I was surprised how heavy this weapon was "and of course this shows the damage it could inflict on a skull🧠👸🤴

Background of the war📚🧠/Antecedentes de la guerra⚔️🚩

museum view🌏🚩

The Hundred Years War was known for the participation of France and England and the English would practice the same strategic combat system against the army of Castilla, a cavalry positioned on top of a high hill, the infantry in the middle and archers on the flanks previously already The English had surprised the French with this formation and they would fall into the trap for the second time. The museum is built on the land where that bloody battle was fought, so walking here is traveling hundreds of years into the past and we get an idea of the terrain characteristics⚔️📚

Juan made an alliance with France and Aragon on the Portuguese side Joao I made a military alliance with the powerful English army, when Juan was looking for provisions in the places where they had an alliance, on the other hand Joao's army was growing exponentially, reaching May 1385 the Castilian troops had their first setback in "Trancoso" however this did not discourage the Spanish army to continue with their plans (ABC story 2022) among the main characters of the combat we stand out from the "allied" side (Juan I, and Nuno Alvares) while from Castilian: (Juan I of Castile)🧠⚔️📚

It was a hot summer📚🧠/Era un verano acalorado⚔️🚩

There were several battles in which the army of Castilla was reduced little by little, let's remember that its initial army was more than thirty thousand warriors, the battle was fought in August in the middle of summer, so that you have an idea this week the temperatures can reach almost 40 degrees, Portugal is quite hot imagine being dressed with many kilos of metal on top plus the heat and not being able to hydrate because once the army established their positions they cannot move, for the Spanish army this was another problem their soldiers were thirsty On the other hand, the Portuguese were more intelligent and Nuno Alvares asked Antao Vasques, who led the archer troop in the second area, to look for several clay jugs and find water for the troops, but it was not possible because there was a great drought, however It is believed that a lady who passed near the battle carried a jug full of water with her and distributed it to many soldiers.🚩📚🤴

According to historical records, the Spanish had an army of more than 31,000 men, of which 2,000 were French knights, on the Portuguese side there were barely 6,000 units available, clearly all this combat was a strategic sum between the Portuguese leaders and the English tactics that already had a historical record of knowing French tactics, so simply... The Portuguese waited... Was it necessary to fight hand to hand if you were outnumbered? I don't think so...🚩📚🧠
Hacia falta luchar cuerpo a cuerpo si tenias inferioridad numerica? no creo...🤴👸🚩⚔️⚔️

A tactical carnage📚🧠/Una carniceria tactica⚔️🚩

The dismounted cavalry together with the infantry created a defense line on the hills while they waited for the army of Castilla, tactically the English archers formed two left and right flanks with a good vision of the firing range due to the height of the hills, the terrain It gave them extra protection because the army in the rear was protected by small rivers, the Spanish already knew that a frontal attack on the Portuguese could cost them dearly, in addition to the fact that the Spanish were very exhausted, however, the Spanish troops saw a gap in the terrain that they would take advantage of to attack, however the Portuguese noticed that weakness and quickly reinforced the terrain... It was a tactical war...🧠📚🤴

Arriving in the afternoon, the Castilians attacked as the Portuguese had rehearsed, it was a frontal attack up the hill, it was what is called "French cavalry charge", hundreds of English archers who were in trenches literally "massacred the French cavalry", later the order was for the infantry to advance to finish annihilating the Spanish-French cavalry, but it was not enough for the King of Castile who knew that he had a much greater numerical superiority than the Portuguese, so he made all the infantry advance and at that point the archers retreat to leave exposed to the Portuguese defense, nothing to do for the Spanish, they were disordered and the Portuguese caused a loss of more than 10 thousand soldiers in the afternoon, seeing that he lost the war, Juan I of Castilla orders the withdrawal! but here in the retreat the Portuguese also killed hundreds of soldiers, the story ends in the retreat of the king to Seville and loss of his fortresses in Portugal. And so Portugal gave a war lesson to Spain who throughout its history wanted to conquer the Portuguese territory and never could!👸🚩🤴🧠⚔️
