The Arcella Shells✍🏻📕 / Las Testas de Arcella🔬 (En-Es)

Hello science-loving friends! While I was looking through my microscope, I noticed some rather strange and unusual objects. At first glance, they seemed to be some kind of "fetus" or organism in a "larval" state, and even some cells. My curiosity led me to investigate further, and I discovered that these rather interesting structures are...✍🏻🔬

And I present to you these microorganisms that are located in the phylum Amoebozoa and grouped in the genus: Arcella, these microorganisms are simple freshwater amoebas quite common, and in reality only about 50 species have been discovered to date, this water sample is a medium quite loaded with organic elements and many nitrites, this is exactly the habitat of these amoebas that are harmless to us! The image is a structure like a shell, which inside is the living organism. I point out the two main parts: (nucleus, and test)⚗️🧬

Amoebas of this genus live inside a simple theca without chambers, as you can see in one of my photos I managed to capture an open theca where the amoeba is taking out its pseudopodia that function as "feet" for movement, in reality the amoebas do not have envelopes and the cell is always in free movement, they are structural proteins such as chitin, which allows the formation of the theca and its beautiful colors that are projected by the light; the most curious thing is that there are some species of Arcellas that cover their theca with organic substances or plates to protect themselves, the main compound is silicic acid.🧬⚗️

These species are too small, measuring about 50µ, impossible to see with the naked eye and you need a minimum of 80x to appreciate their details, all the pseudopods are different between species, they come out through a cone-shaped hole, the endoplasm of most amoebas with thecae is granulated or vacuolated, they surround the digestive vacuole, they have a great variety of microorganisms to feed on, from ciliates to algae.⚗️🧫📕

This is one of my favorite photographs! We can see the theca and the nucleus of the amoeba in great detail. Continuing with the explanation: most of these species are found in freshwater. It is rare to see an Arcella in marine water. We normally see them in the plankton layer, on the upper surface, in humid soils. Since theca are quite resistant, we can find them almost everywhere!📕🥽

Based on this reference: https://arcella.nl/arcella/ we can identify our amoeba as Arcella crenulata, there really is a lot of similarity, its shell is semi-circular, when they are young the shells have no colors, it is free-living and lives in fresh water, they absorb iron that is why when they are adults they turn brown! The nuclei are vacuform, they are one of the MOST DIFFICULT ORGANISMS TO IDENTIFY BECAUSE THEY MUST BE MADE LATERALLY📕🧫

I managed to do the impossible by taking a side photograph of the shell of an Arcella. As you can see, it's a bit concave. I want to make it clear that I don't know if it's the same species or another. The important thing is that we see a different shape to its theca.📕✍🏻
