Hello friends, today I bring a post to analyze the seed of the fruit: (Carica papaya L.) which is quite popular all over the world for its digestive and nutritional properties, here in Europe it is expensive but while I ate it I was curious to investigate. a little some structures that make the seed quite interesting, hasn't it happened to you that when you hold a seed it has a layer that when we press it contains a liquid? When I was a child I used to press them, but today we know that it is the sarcotesta and that it has an important function in the seed, join me in this experiment to learn a little more!🧠🧫

How it looks externally (Carica papaya L.)🔬/ Como luce externamente (Carica papaya L.)🧠

IMG20230524154150.jpg

First of all to differentiate the parts of the Carica papaya L. we begin to divide the fruit into three "parts" apical, middle and basal, the apical part being the place that connects the fruit with the plant, then the fruits are divided into three parts The outermost being the epicarp, which is the thin rind of the fruit, then the mesocarp made up of the pulp and which is normally what is consumed the most in the fruit! although not all fruits have these three well-defined areas and not all parts are edible, and finally the innermost part and where the seeds are, the endocarp, I read that the seeds of this fruit are edible despite being quite bitter and that have nutritional properties, I am not a specialist on the subject so I cannot confirm this!🧠🔬

What does the seed look like?🔬/ Que aspecto tiene la semilla?🧠

IMG20230524154205.jpg

Without using the microscope we can see that the papaya seed has an oval shape, that is, it is ovoid, and also its color appears to be black or brown, only when the seed is ripe can we see its true color and of course it is brown! It does not present an exact size, on the contrary, a seed can vary 4-6 millimeters, being a "primitive" species, it was considered by the investigation of: (Niembro, 1988) a seed of small size! If you look closely at the photograph taken by the microscope, we can clearly see the outer layer that protects the seed and that has one more function of propagation and dispersal!🔬🧠

What is the exotheist🔬/ Que es la exotesta🧠

IMG20230525114103.jpg

The exotesta or also known as: (sarcotesta) is a cover that surrounds some seeds that has a fleshy appearance and texture, it could be said that they are a derivation of the epidermis of the seed, botanists have concluded that one of its main functions is serve as an attraction for the moment of seed dispersal! usually occurs with dispersal of animals! If you look at the magnification of the microscope you can see some points that are the cells🧠🔬

Here we can clearly see the cells found in the Sarcotesta, its main compounds are sugars, water and a high percentage of butyric acid, the latter is made up of oils and has a strong odor that I think should serve as an animal attraction, the The problem is that when it undergoes a decomposition process, it gives off a very unpleasant odor, a product of butyric acid!🧠🔬

what is the integument🔬/ que es el tegumento🧠

IMG20230525114925.jpg

The integument is also called episperm and it is the outermost part of the seed, it serves as its protection and protects the embryo, the integument is essential to perform a pre-dispersion because it prevents the seed from being fully digested by the animal here we see that in the papaya is corrugated!🧠🔬

Internal structures🔬/ Estruturas internas🧠

IMG20230525115056.jpg

Here I would like to define three very important botanical terms in the seed, it is first about the seminal coat: we could classify the papaya seed as bitegumented, this means that there is a derivation of the seminal primordium in two integuments: "testa and tegmen ", then we have the endosperm that is classified as external because it has the property of completely surrounding the embryo, and finally:"the embryo", it is axial due to its position, it is also folial since its cotyledons are expanded.🧠🔬

IMG20230525115249.jpg

The cotyledon is an important part of the seed and it will be the one that will give rise to its first leaf! It is a very remarkable characteristic in angiosperms because with them the seeds that can be mono-di cotyledonians can be classified.🧠🧠

Components of the cotyledon🔬/ Componentes del cotiledon🧠

IMG20230525115309.jpg

The main components of the cotyledon are starch, oils and nutrients! because? because it is necessary for the plant to consume it and to be able to carry out its growth and development process!🧠👨‍🎓

Nutrients of (Carica papaya L.)🔬/ Nutrientes de (Carica papaya L.)🧠

Papaya is very nutritious and famous for containing an enzyme called "papain" that helps break down proteins! but also the fruit is rich in vitamins A and C, as you can see in the photos there is a high content of water and carbohydrates let's say it is quite complete and helps the digestive system👨‍🎓🧠

I can't wait to have a garden so I can just crack open some papayas or something else climate-suitable and just dump it in the ground and watch it grow. But why wait when you have a microscope heh. Loved these images!
