Hello adventurous friends, you have probably already seen in some of my posts several castles in Portugal, I have already visited castles from the 12th century, some even built in the water, but I had never been in a castle so old, and to break that record I visited the castle of Santarem which is estimated to have already existed a primitive construction here called (castrum) that is to say we are seeing a fortress from the 8th century BC, I don't know but I think it could be the oldest and best preserved in Portugal. Let's see what its history says, join me in this experience.📸🧭

First I visit the "Figueiras" fountain🏰🚩 /Primero visito la fuente "Figueiras" 🌎🗺️

Before visiting the Castle I decided to stop at a water fountain that has a lot of history and is a symbol of Santarem, as it represents a civil Gothic architecture, since 1910 it was a symbol of national heritage, and it is very rare because it is one of the few that exist in Europe with that type of architecture so well preserved, you can find it at the following coordinates: (39 ° 14′ 17 "N, 8 ° 40′ 57" W), it was built in a strategic site since it served to supply water to the medieval citadel inside and outside the walls of the Castle.🚩🧭

It is not known exactly in which reign of Portugal it was built but it is believed that it was either Denis or Alfonso IV. It was a great advance to improve the quality of life in the city and a great contribution from the King of Portugal since it was very close to the river Tagus and probably the water that was used came from there, which is why we can see the coat of arms of Portugal on the stone.🧭🚩

Quinta da Ribafria🏰🚩 /Quinta da Ribafria🌎🗺️

Another obligatory stop if you go to Santarem and pass through Sintra is the "Quinta ribafria" it is actually another magical place full of history and where you can give yourself the luxury of walking along a stone path that also dates back to the medieval era, this is a villa or mansion with many extensions of land that belonged to King Manuel I, Sintra has many villas with this style since they are far from the city and have a good climate many rich families, dukes, counts bought here and spent a lot of time doing outdoor activities, hunting being the most used at the time.👨🏻‍🏫⛲🚩

Gaspar Gonçalves was the one who commissioned the construction of a palace here in the Renaissance style, maintaining a touch of the Manueline styles that were predominant in the 15th and 16th centuries. Later, in the great earthquake of 1755, the villa suffered great damage and in 1902 it was sold to a count who carried out restoration work. It was later abandoned and acquired by the municipal chamber of Sintra in 2003, where it is open to the public as a space for leisure and walking with your family and pets.🌎🚩

Castle or ruins?🏰🚩 /Castillo o ruinas?🌎🗺️

Unfortunately, although the place is called a Castle, I actually think it is more of a ruin because only a few vestiges and the wall remain, in addition to the main gate called "portas do sol", but what could I say if it is something from three or five thousand BC, we don't see things like that in such good condition as this, I remind you that before the construction of the castle there was already a prehistoric fortification, the castle was built on top of this area but it is still valid because some structures from that time were used to build the fortress in the medieval era.🚩⛲

"Sao Bento" Viewpoint🏰🚩 /Mirador "Sao Bento"🌎🗺️

Before reaching the Castle in question we will walk a long street that takes us to the park where the walls are, but first we will stop at this beautiful viewpoint where we have this beautiful view, you can see a bit of the Tejo River and some villages on the outskirts of the center of Santarem.🌎⛲🚩

We have already entered the garden that I mentioned earlier, where the remains of the archaeological things that remain from the Castle are, there is a small museum where the objects found here from the Iron Age are, unfortunately the museum was closed! You can get here by car and I uploaded a photo with the park's schedule.🚩⛲

How much history?🧭🚩 /Cuanta historia?🌎🗺️

To summarize everything that happened within these walls in the year 4000 BC there were already remains that showed that people lived in this place, possibly the Celts, later the Romans arrived who dominated and built fortresses until 160 after Christ, this because the barbarians displaced the Romans, at that point in history the Phoenicians inhabited these lands, then it was the Moors for several centuries, until it was conquered by the Portuguese in the 12th century.🚩🏰

The medieval castle🧭🚩 /El castillo medieval🌎🗺️

Gate of the Sun📸

There are few castles in Portugal that have had so much military activity throughout their history. In fact, I have visited some where no war ever took place, but this one here was conquered from the Moors in 1127. It was a well-planned night assault. In later years it was besieged three times by the Moors, but was only reconquered by three different kings. It defended itself very well. It was never reconquered by the enemy. Also, something unusual was that I was in a castle that had been reconquered more than four times, but of course those further south. This one was important because it was close to Lisbon.🧭📸

Alfonso Henriques the Conqueror🧭🚩 /Alfonso Henriques el Conquistador🌎🗺️

It's incredible that wherever you go in Portugal, when you read about its history, the one who conquered the place was Afonso Henrique, for a reason they nicknamed him the conqueror! He was a great warrior and belonged to the order of the crusaders, and that support was so important that it was thanks to the Crusaders that he conquered Lisbon.🏰🚩
