Greetings friends! Today I traveled to "Santiago do Cacém" in the Alentejana region in the south of the country to visit some Roman ruins that I had on my list for a long time. They are called "Miróbriga" and are known for their strong Roman occupation in the 1st century BC. However, there is a lot of history wrapped around these ruins. For 3 euros for adults and following the coordinates I leave you in the blog you will have the privilege of visiting one of the most important Roman ruins in the Iberian Peninsula. It is classified as one of the largest and most researched in Portugal. Here they managed to collect medical material to support the theory that the Romans performed advanced "surgical" work for the time, trying as much as possible to avoid amputating limbs.⛰️👨🏻🏫

Our first step is to enter the museum to observe all the objects that were excavated in Miróbriga and that tell us a story of how the Romans lived, this is the part that we ignore and give less importance, but it is crucial to be able to reveal the customs and habits of a Roman in their daily life, this information also allows us to understand the relationship of people in their homes and workplaces, for example some pieces of Ludus latrunculorum were discovered that give us a reference to the type of activity that allowed socializing and that was normally played ANYWHERE.⛰️🚙
Nuestro primer paso es entrar al museo para observar todos los objetos que fueron excavados en Miróbriga y que nos cuentan una historia de como vivían los Romanos, esta es la parte que ignoramos y damos menos importancia, pero es crucial para poder desvelar las costumbres y los hábitos de un Romano en su día a día, esta información permite también comprender la relación de las personas en sus viviendas y locales de trabajo, por ejemplo se descubrieron algunas piezas de Ludus latrunculorum que nos hace una referencia el tipo de actividad que permitía socializar y que normalmente se jugaban en CUALQUIER SITIO.🏞️🌍

I have already seen on other occasions that the Romans used ancient structures from other populations to build new homes. I suppose it was an effective way of taking advantage of and saving resources. According to archaeological studies, the Romans were not the first to settle in these lands. On the contrary, between the 6th and 1st centuries BC, there was reference to little advanced populations from the Bronze and Iron Ages having colonized Miróbriga.🚩👨🏻🎓🧔🏻♂️

First we must highlight that this area is quite high, which allowed for the creation of a fairly good defensive system compared to the city centre, and there were many resources close to the area, from agriculture to mining and fishing. The Romans were the first to grow the area (Mirobrigensis qui celtici cognominantur), never had so many people lived in these lands until the Romans arrived.🚩🏞️
Primero debemos resaltar que esta zona es bastante elevada, lo que permitía crear un sistema defensivo bastante bueno en comparación con el centro de la ciudad, además había muchos recursos próximos del área, desde agricultura hasta explotación minera y pesquera los Romanos fueron los primeros en hacer crecer la zona de (Mirobrigensis qui celtici cognominantur), nunca habían habitado tantas personas en estas tierras hasta los Romanos llegar.⛰️👨🏻🏫

One of my favorite things to do in Miróbriga celticorum is to be able to cross a real Roman stone bridge with its respective road, I had never seen it so preserved, as well as the stone streets, we also got to visit houses, thermal baths, among other structures, the tour is approximately 2 hours and is quite long🌍📍
Una de mis cosas favoritas en Miróbriga celticorum es poder cruzar un verdadero puente romano de piedra con su respectiva calzada, nunca lo había visto tan preservado, al igual que las calles con piedras, también conseguimos visitar casas, termas, entre otras estructuras, el recorrido es de aproximadamente 2 horas es bastante grande 🗺️🚩

Yes, this was definitely what surprised me about Miróbriga. Personally, I'd never seen a painting as detailed and well-preserved as this one. This practice was common among the Romans, who would decorate the walls and corridors of streets, or even the home of an important person, with ceramics and paintings. Believe me, I've already visited many Roman ruins on my blog, but none like this one, so far.🚩🚙
Si definitivamente esto fue lo que me sorprendió de Miróbriga en lo personal nunca había visto una pintura tan detallada y bien conservada como esta, esta práctica era común los Romanos decoraban con cerámicas y pinturas las paredes y corredores de las calles o fácilmente una casa de una persona importante. Something incredible about Miróbriga is the hippodrome, which stretches over 350 meters. Horse racing was held here, a very lucrative activity for the Romans and comparable to gladiatorial combat.👨🏻🏫⛰️

The "forum" was a public space where many Romans could gather to celebrate, or receive some news from a Roman leader. It always comprised a fairly large space with enormous columns. Here, parties could also be held, some activities could be carried out, it was like "the heart of the city."⛰️👨🏻🏫
