Museum of the Dunes👨‍💻🧠 / Museo de las Dunas🌅 (En-Es)

When we visit a beach we usually come across several meters of sand that seems to have been placed there by the wind and that has no purpose in nature but something I learned as a scientist is that the planet has a reason for "everything", and here enter the dunes! did you ever hear that word? normally these accumulations of sand that we usually play with when we go to the beach have hundreds or even thousands of years there... Visiting this museum helped me learn a little more about these accumulations of sand and I will teach you a little about their function in ecosystems !👨‍💻🌏🧭

What are the Dunes?🚩🧠/ Que son las Dunas¿?🌏

As I mentioned before, the dunes are more than small accumulations of sand; on the contrary, they are very peculiar coastal ecosystems, which are home to a large amount of fauna and flora, for example, these ones here are from the Gaia area in the north of the country and it is famous Because it is home to 2 endemic species of plants and reptiles, the dunes are naturally formed by coastal winds pushed from the sea, which is why they are also called "sandes". Their composition is similar to that of coastal sand, they are composed of several layers of sediments, the dunes are interesting to analyze the behavior of the wind, for example if the wind is unidirectional then the dune will have a "C" shape

Characteristics of the dunes🚩🧠/ Caracteristicas de las dunas🌏

The first plant that I come across while walking on the dunes is Otanthus maritimus and I find it quite interesting because it is exclusive to the Atlantic coasts, so it decorates and attracts many insects during its "blooming" season. Who would say that we can see many bees? and wasps in the dunes? nobody would believe this because literally the dunes are small deserts, but with this text you already know that there is much more life than you thought in the dunes! the two main components of a dune is either "calcareous sand or sediment", and where does the calcareous origin come from? Well, of course, the wind is capable of transporting these sediments hundreds or thousands of kilometers! a dune can measure from a few centimeters to hundreds of meters, it can be a few or thousands of years old! Can you imagine the negative impact of the government cleaning the dune beaches to establish premises or open spaces for tourist bathing spots???🧭🙇‍♂️🧠

Dune functions🚩🧠/ Funciones de las dunas🌏

We begin with the function that for me is the most important and that is to be a natural barrier to the ocean, that is, it prevents the waves from reaching beyond the coast and what negative effect does this have? actually a lot because off the coast we only have a biodiversity that can only carry out its biological functions with fresh water, the dunes are like large sediment reserves, in turn they function as a beautiful landscape that is quite pleasant for our eyes, as So? Isn't a beach with dunes and plants more beautiful than a deserted beach???👨‍💻🌅

Here in the museum there is a small-scale model that forms dunes quickly, remember when I told you there are no dunes without plants? Actually the dunes and other natural objects are what allow the dunes to form since they form natural barriers and at that point the sediments accumulate, in the areas where there are no plants the sand only accumulates in layers but not in mounds! Another interesting fact that for a very "desert" area there is a wide variety of endemic plant species. I counted more than six species, one invasive!👨‍💻🤷‍♂️🌏

Protecting the dunes🚩🧠/ Protegiendo las dunas🌏

An effective way to stop sand erosion and dune destruction is to place wooden palisades along the dunes to replace the function of plants, which is to cut the wind and deposit sediment, if without these palisades the wind It would pass directly and instead the sediments would reach hundreds of meters from the coast, to maximize the deposit of sediments, the palisades are placed against the wind, that is, the concave area.👨‍💻🌏

A nice experience🚩🧠/ Una bonita experiencia🌏

Without a doubt, museums like these help us to reflect and understand the dynamics of these ecosystems that suffer a lot from their destruction due to anthropogenic factors because they are in places where thousands of people spend a year to use the beaches for leisure purposes, however the construction of elevated bridges helps to preserve them since people do not go through them! I really liked that the municipal chamber blocked the access so that no vehicle can also cause a negative impact on the dunes!👨‍💻🙇‍♂️

Lo he disfrutado mucho. 🤗
