Hello friends! We start this 2025 with full quality content, today I traveled more than 90km from Lisbon to reach the Protected Mountain Range "Serra de Montejunto" with one goal, to complete the "caves" trail, a 16km long walk with a level 3/5 requirement where we can take a trip back in time to learn about the main aspects of the geological and cultural evolution of Portugal in confined and difficult to access places, however I "armed myself" with my lamp to explore one of the most important caves, enjoy my experience!🗺️🧭
For the hike we are going to use the application: (wikiloc) it is quite famous and used by many hikers around the world, therefore you have the coordinates, as you can see on the map it is a linear walk without a return point, meaning you will have to return along the same path, the best time to do these trails is in spring or winter, summer is not recommended at all this year the whole mountain range burned down and if that happens you won't have a chance to escape so it's better not to risk it! I recommend hiking boots and poles, plenty of water, thermal clothing.🗺️📸
The trail suffered a large fire this summer. It is said that the reserve lost more than 50% of its green areas, but it is gradually recovering. It is a shame that the pines were the most affected as they take a long time to grow and this makes the eucalyptus predominate in the landscape, which goes against the grain of a Mediterranean forest. We must become aware of the situation of accidental burning, so my advice is that if you smoke, please don't do it when you go hiking. These fires cause irreversible damage to biodiversity.🌍🌄
Despite the damage caused by the fire, much of the trail is still intact, which makes our hike quite interesting. I saw many flowering plants and we are still in the middle of winter. Throughout the hike, you can see all the mountains in the reserve, with the highest point being 670 meters. We are going to climb approximately 300 meters because the caves are formed at the top of the mountain.🗺️🚩
What to learn about the Montejunto mountain range🏔️🗺️/Que aprender sobre la sierra de montejunto🧭🌿🌄
The Montejunto mountain range is a beautiful cultural and ecological heritage of Portugal, being one of the most predominant geological formations in the region. It is believed that its formation dates back to the Jurassic era, more than 70 million years ago. An external layer of limestone was responsible for the formation of most of the caves present in the mountain, clearly due to the action of wind and rain! Thanks to this nature reserve, caving can be practiced at a scientific level in Portugal.👨🏻🏫🧔🏻♂️
The mountain range served as a refuge for several civilizations that inhabited the Bronze and Copper Age in Portugal, possibly more than 5,000 years ago. Thanks to the caves, various objects and tools used for burials, religious cults, food, or simply for use in everyday life were recovered. Clearly nature will always be dominant in any era of history and under several layers of sand, animal bones were also found along with those of humans. This means that animals and humans competed for the caves to protect themselves from the environmental factor.🌿🚩🧭
incredible landscape🧔🏻♂️⛰️🌍
There are caves where remains of animals were found that today do not exist even in Portugal in the wild, such as horses, lynxes, cave bears, the latter extinct in the country, and the lynx is barely seen in some parts of the north because it is also in danger of extinction, due to the great sensitivity of ecological information of this place, which is why we must take care of it and preserve it! Some caves exist from before man lived on earth.🦌🦌🦌
This is one of the highest parts of the mountain and of course our walk is through a small forest of eucalyptus and other plants that decorate the landscape, here we begin to see only green and we see that the fire did not reach this part!🌲🌿
At the top of the mountain (281 meters)🏔️🌲/En la cima de la montana (281metros)🧭🌿
We reach the top of the mountain and we are only a kilometer from the caves, and this is the most difficult part of the trail because we have to be very careful where we step since there are small vertical caves that are more than 100 meters high and if we fall into one of them we probably won't make it... So be extremely careful where you step! The main cave has a staircase and that's the one we'll be looking for!📸👨🏻🏫
On the way to the Montejunto cave🏔️🌲/Camino a la cueva Montejunto🧭🌿
Well friends, after many hours of walking I reached the main cave! As I told you before, there is a staircase to go down, here is where we have to use the lamp because it is very dark down there and since it rained these days it is quite slippery. This is one of the most studied caves where people lived in prehistoric times, crazy, right?📸🍁🌲
Exploring the cave🏔️🌲/Explorando la cueva🧭👨🏻🏫
This is what darkness is like without using a lamp
Asi es la oscuridad sin usar lampara
One of the ways to study the age of a cave is by dating the stalactites and stalagmites since they have a fairly precise growth, they grow millimeters every hundreds or millions of years!📸🍁
You can explore the cave in 20 minutes, however it has very narrow and dangerous areas that I clearly will not go down because I have no experience in caving. I'll leave that to the scientists!⛔📸

What an amazing escape! I love the color of the nature there, red, green, brown, yellow; gorgeous.
Yup, inside to the cave is awesome
Wow, you managed to visit a very beautiful place, you managed to capture every beautiful moment on this trip, it's really amazing, have a nice day my brother.
Thanks for you visit
Me gustó mucho tu post.
gracias por tu visita
I saw some really amazingly beautiful views I was really entertained by them,❤️
Portugal has many beautiful places
