I recommend visiting the castle in autumn and even as you can see in the photo the sky is cloudy but there was terrible heat, Mertola and all of Alentejo is known for its high temperatures in summer so come prepared if you take on the challenge of coming between June to August! The castle has good historical interest since it is the cultural heritage of Portugal and many battles were fought here since it is close to Spain and to the south it bordered with the Moors.👀🧭🌏

History of conquests🙇♂️🏰/ Historia de conquistas🧭🍍
Abu-l-Qasim, who is the character deserving of this imposing statue, was an ally of Henrique who would conquer the castle, however long before this conquest the village belonged to the Romans who in 400 BC invested a lot of time and money in making it grow. and populate it since it was an excellent commercial route along the Guadiana River to the north of the country. When the Roman Empire fell, the barbarians sacked it and the castle was destroyed.👨🏫🤴🏰🧭

Then the village was abandoned until the early 1100s when it would be rebuilt and occupied by the Moors, a civilization that dominated Portugal for some centuries, between 1144-1151) many works were carried out to strengthen and fortify the castle who would now defend the territory not from the barbarians if not the Portuguese troops who had established themselves in the north of the country until Lisbon, when we reached the most important period of the castle in 1238 something happened that would change the history of the territory, the troops of Sancho II would conquer this castle and expel the Arabs here in several days of battle, however there was very little resistance!🏰🚩

It happened that in the era of maritime discoveries the castle stopped being very important for Portugal even though it still maintained a garrison because it was on the border with Spain. Two hundred years later the castle was completely abandoned, in fact it was in ruins, only in the century XVII is that it was invested in the castle and it recovered a little, however it did not have any type of interest, either political or warlike!🚩🏰

The main stone used for construction is the "xisto" stone that is common in the area along with a mixture of mud, lime and other resources such as stones and bricks.🏰🧠🌏
