Magnificent Castle of Serpa🌏🚙 / Magnifico Castillo de Serpa🍍 (En-Es)

Hello traveling friends! passing through here again and leaving you another visit to one of the most interesting castles that I visited in Portugal and its layout and walls are too different from the rest of the castles that I already visited, with this one I already visited more than 25 castles in Portugal and getting closer and closer to achieving my goal (showing all the castles in Portugal), although I have probably already uploaded the main ones on pinmapple, I cannot leave aside Serpa's because for me it is the most "brutal" in Alentejo! Join me on this journey!🧭🏰

The castle is a reflection of the power that Portugal once was in the Medieval era, it communicated with the castles of Mertola, Noudar and Moura, all ready to protect the south of the country from the Arabs who at that height dominated the Algarve, let us remember that the The main city was Lisbon and if the city fell the territory would be exposed to be conquered, therefore these castles were the pillar for Portugal to expand and protect itself from not only the Arabs but also future enemies like the Spanish! Visiting it is taking a tour of the country's history, learning about medieval architecture and of course enjoying the best that the country has to offer you!🧭🌏🚙

History🙇‍♂️🚙/ Historia🏰🍍

The castle, despite being officially built in the 13th century, was previously inhabited by some communities in the region and dates back to prehistoric times. The city and the castle gained power and interest when the Romans colonized the Alentejo region, as there are many settlements to extract. minerals and this strengthened the Roman Empire, which tells us that Portugal was connected to Hispania by a set of roads which marketed different types of resources!🧭🌏🧠

Roman relics🧠🙇‍♂️

The interesting thing about the history where the castle was built is that each civilization that occupied the territory left a mark in time that still lasts, after the fall of the Romans, the area was occupied by Vigoths, Germanics, Analos, Vandals, even reach the most recent and with which Portugal would fight hundreds of battles the Moors, they would be the ones who would build a first fortification in the castle! this in the 8th century after Christ👀🧭

In the year 1160, an excursion was made by the troops of the crusaders led by the conqueror D. Alfonso. When they went beyond the Portuguese lands near the Guadiana River, they sighted the fortress that at that time belonged to the Arabs, in the year 1185 Alfonso conquers the castle and the lands of Serpa in a bloody battle, but luck would not last long as the Muslim troops of "Iacube Almançor" would reconquer the castle in the year 1195, so it would only remain in the hands of the Portuguese for 10 years.👨‍🏫🧠🌏🧭

Portuguese vs Muslims🙇‍♂️🚙/ Portugueses vs Musulmanes🏰🍍

This is the entrance to the castle, a wall that gives the impression of falling but in reality it is more than 500 years old and is still preserved, it was probably broken by the earthquake of the 17th century or perhaps it is a demonstration of the battles that took place here. For hundreds of years, Sancho III would not sit idly by losing his castle in 1195 and organized one of the bloody battles in the southern part of the country, conquering Serpa and several cities in Alentejo, handing the castle over to Don Fernando.🧭🏰📚

Portuguese vs Castile🙇‍♂️🚙/ Portugueses vs Castilla🏰🍍

Between the marriages between the kings of Portugal and the Spanish, several divisions of territories were made, including the Spanish who came to possess the castle. However, in the 1385th century, the Avis conquered the castle for the Portuguese and it would be a good strategic base since it would be very close. from Spain! Since the lands were devastated by numerous battles against the Spanish and French, it was difficult for the city to grow, however the castle was increasingly fortified! to the point where all the male inhabitants of Serpa were soldiers.🏰🙇‍♂️🍍

Archeological Museum🙇‍♂️🚙/ Museo arqueologico🏰🍍
