Hello friends who love science and nature, today I am very excited to show you this new post. To do this, I traveled to the Mafra forest reserve to visit a place that has wild Iberian wolves in freedom. It seems like something uninteresting, but in reality, the probability of seeing a wolf in the wild is so low that on average it takes 2 years... Incredible, right? Will I be able to break the statistics and photograph one today? Don't miss it...β°οΈπ€πΊ
What is the ecology of the Iberian wolf?πΊπ€ /Como es la ecologia del lobo iberico?β°οΈπ§π»βπ
The Iberian wolf is a subspecies that was discovered by a Spanish scientist named (Angel Cabrera), its scientific name is "Canis lupus signatus" we get it in the Iberian Peninsula, in Portugal it is only found in the wild in the north, it is not the same species that is distributed in the rest of Europe since there are variations in the coloration of the fur, being Canis lupus signatus more colorful and with more vibrant tones, also in size it is smaller! It is a carnivorous mammal, and is within the group of (canids).β°οΈπ€

Here everyone has their opinion on the subject, there are people like me who think that it is not correct to have animals in these spaces and that the best way is to place them in their habitat, however our guide explained to us that they do not have reproduction within the facilities, meaning the animal does not have the reproductive capacity and they are wolves brought here due to complaints, injured animals, animal exploitation, among other cases! Later, the respective work is done so that the animal is out of danger and it is left in the facilities since they do not have the capacity to survive again in nature, in addition to the fact that the protection reserve does not have a field to put the animal in the wild since they do not have the resources. In reality, it is private companies and the public who maintain this facility.π€πΊ

Alarming dataπΊπ€ /Datos alarmantesβ°οΈπ§π»βπ
Previously the Iberian wolf was found throughout the Portuguese territory except for some areas of Alentejo where the landscape is flat, but over the years the animal was hunted and its ecosystem was destroyed, which led to a reduction in its territory. The animal's personality does not facilitate coexistence with humans. The Canis lupus signatus species is not shy about preying on prey that is daily used for human consumption. This behavior causes humans to kill them to protect their food. It is enough that the animal was hunted by man throughout its history and they developed a very high sense of human detection, they can recognize our scent and sound from kilometers away. Normally this species is very afraid of man and rarely attacks a human!π§π»βππΈ

Do you know what this is?πΊπ€ /Sabes que es esto?β°οΈπ§π»βπ
You've probably seen spiked collars on dogs to scare them away, but not these designs! Do you have any idea what they were used for? Let me explain: to avoid killing the animal, man understood that a large dog is enough to scare away a wolf, however, the wolf is an extremely intelligent and strong animal, socially structured, several can distract and attack at the same time, when they attack a dog they do it on the neck... And this is where the collar has an important role, it doesn't hurt the wolf and it doesn't allow the wolf to kill the dog, therefore "it's an interesting symbiosis", our guide tells us that they are still used today.π§π»βππ©π€

In search of wolvesπΊπ€ /En busca de Lobosβ°οΈπ§π»βπ
Our guide, after the introductory talk, takes us outside to photograph the wolves, clearly if we are lucky. As we walk, he explains to us that the fences have a shape where they cannot climb or dig, everything is properly secured for our visit. There are two wolves for each hectare of protection, they are kept separate to avoid fights. In addition, each animal has a name and is identified by sex. The guide shows us a photo to identify the name.πΊβ°οΈ

And mission accomplished, I managed to see a wolf. This is a rather shy female. The guide told us that we were very lucky because this specimen rarely shows itself. Apparently she was curious, so I managed to photograph her! I think that capturing this moment was worth the effort I put in and traveling more than 40km! It is such a beautiful animal, and well, I must admit that seeing a wolf for the first time in the "wild" is the best experience of all.π€π
