First experience with a Nemertine🧠 / Primera experiencia con un nemertinos🧫🔬

Hello science lovers, today we are going to see a specimen of Nemertea, they are practically "worms" that although the majority are from salt water, this one here I captured from fresh stagnant water, my first experience with these animals is that they are very difficult to identify so much that I had to ask a friend who was an expert on the subject for help, I was confused with a flatworm but no! It is a nemertea and we are going to see the main characteristics of them, which seem to have a somewhat complex anatomy!🙇‍♂️🧠🧫

Description🙇‍♂️🔬/ Descripcion🧠🧫

As you can see, the water feature was full of detritus and mud which is a favorable environment to find Nemerteas, they are free-living and common in salt water, however there are some species in Portugal! I am not a specialist in them so identifying the species is very complicated! Since they do not have cavities, they are classified as acoelomates, they are small in size, less than 20 centimeters, this one here is not an adult, on the contrary, since it is juvenile, it is more difficult to identify the species. One of the characteristic features of nemerteans is the proboscis or "envaginable proboscis" that has the property of retracting and expanding! I think that this specimen, due to its proboscis, could be grouped in the "enolpla" class.🔬🌏🧠

So far, more than 1,200 species have been identified on the planet. One of the differences with flatworms is that the body wall has a more complex organization. In the upper part, they have musculature and their body is covered by cilia. The dermis is very dense. and secretes a substance in addition to having connective tissue!🧠🕵️‍♀️🙇‍♂️

Nervous system🙇‍♂️🔬/ Sistema nervioso🧠🧫

For these photos I used filters that allow the different types of organs to be highlighted, the nervous system is simple, made up of the ganglia that you can see in the red photo, there are four ganglia in total, as you can see on each side of the body there are two cords nerves that are distributed vertically throughout the body, the eyes can be from two to more than one hundred, they are photoreceptors and move towards light, I think this species has six.🧠🙇‍♂️🕵️‍♀️

The circulatory system is closed and two veins pass next to the digestive tube, the way the blood flows is inverted and they have inside (amebocytes) and some pigments whose function is not known to this day!🕵️‍♀️🙇‍♂️

The digestive system is nothing more than a mouth, a digestive tube included in the esophagus and anus, the excretion of substances is done by the protonephridia that are identical to flatworms, the proboscis plays an important role in the ecology of the animal since it is used For food, they are carnivores and capture their prey with the proboscis, some use a stylet that poisons the prey and then it is captured! They are dioecious, meaning their reproduction is sexual, they are common in ponds or humid areas!🔬🌏🧠
