Experiment with aquatic plant🥼 / Experimento con planta acuatica🧠 (En-Es)

Hello science lovers, today I bring you a small experiment where we can see the characteristics of Lemna minor, while I was walking through a park I noticed something curious passing a small "river" of wastewater bordering the park but I noticed that this plant did not grow at throughout the entire river if not in specific places and that curiosity led me to investigate what are the parameters of the water for the plant to develop in certain conditions, we will try to answer these questions in my post!🔬🧫

Water samples🧫🧠/ Muestras de agua🔬🧠

As scientists we always want to do a job that is as decent and realistic as possible and for that we must base our projects on some work previously done on the subject (background), for this experiment I based myself on the scientific publication of: (Torres, Marcos y Arenas, 2011) was published at the University of Chile and has a good ecological contribution, so I found it interesting to recreate something similar! To start I had to take two water samples from the same body of water: (river of brackish water) in two different geographical points. This first one that you see in the photo was in an area surrounded by vegetation where the water had very little circulation, the appearance It was a dark water but when I removed it from my container it seemed transparent, this could only be due to the lame soil.🧠🔬🌏

Between point A and point B there is a total of half a kilometer so I think it was an interesting distance because the water could have some kind of circulation, here there are some interesting geographical aspects unlike point A the water seems to stop with a Very low circulation due to the dirt in the water, the vegetation and the irregular terrain! As it is a pedestrian crossing, many people can throw dirt into the water, which I have to observe! It was an open area with direct and indirect sun just like point A, but here I noticed that the water was green... When taking a water sample, I noticed that there is a layer on the surface of the water with plants!!! How interesting... What will it be?🌏🔬🧠

The accelerated growth and development of this aquatic plant is directly related to the environmental impact, this directly affects the bodies of water that are managed in an inefficient way, so it will always be good to encourage the use of ecological measures that benefit the bodies of water. water and industries (Carrasquero, 2002). Macrophytes have always been considered pests in ecosystems because of their very fast development! and it may be true because there are many cases where some species of Lemna was introduced into a lake for anthropic reasons and caused big problems and we have the famous case of: (https://www.venelogia.com/archivos/173/) that I had the privilege of participating in and studying the resistance of Lemna to various heavy metals. Lake Maracaibo suffered great problems due to Lemna... A rather problematic species🧠🌏

The so-called duckweed is an aquatic plant that grows in rich environments with high levels of Nitrogen concentration, and this occurs due to the constant entry of untreated wastewater into the lake (Nava 2004). This is already beginning to make sense in my experiment because Nava affirms that the wastewater where I extracted the plants has high concentrations of Nitrogen due to contamination! Lemna is like a natural filter and absorbs dangerous metals, therefore the problem is when it is contaminated and the species that inhabits the body of water consume it, since the plant itself is not a problem for the ecosystem (Nava 2004).🌏🧠🧫

Discussion🧫🧠/ Discusion🔬🧠

When you measure the parameters of the water, you first notice that the pH was between 8-8.5 and we know that Lemna grows rapidly at a pH of 6.3-8 (Wikipedia), therefore at the pH level of the water at point B it has the ideal for its growth, in addition to direct sun in certain areas and indirect sun in others, the water temperature due to the almost summer climate is around 22-24 this temperature is also ideal for the plant (Landolt 2009), the parameters of carbonates and nitrogen were also high, typical of water contaminated with excess nutrients (Venelogia 2010), and finally both bodies of water had very little circulation of water because due to geographical and polluting factors the water was stagnant but while at point A Algae do not grow at point B, they abound, my hypothesis is that point A is a park and therefore the water is constantly dredged and pollution is prohibited! Point B is literally a landfill, there is no control.🔬🌏

Conclusion🧫🧠/ Conclusion🔬🧠

Lemnas that are floating have air spaces in their epidermis that help them with buoyancy but this can change because in adverse conditions the fronds can release that air and sink, remaining in a state of rest to emerge in better conditions (Landolt 2009 ), with this experiment I can conclude that although the river was the same for both sites, the water conditions can change abruptly due to human contamination within it, it is clear that at one point of the river the plant can proliferate due to the large amount of contamination while that in the other part of the river does not grow due to care in the water.🧠🥼🚩
