Within Portuguese territory, for centuries some of the most important battles in Europe were fought, including that of Aljubarrota. In an attempt to invade Portugal, the Spanish with a troop of more than 30,000 soldiers fought against a troop of 5,000 Portuguese soldiers and in just one It was enough for the Portuguese to obtain a crushing victory over the Spanish-French, however, despite fighting in the medieval era, invasions of the country were constant by Spain and in the 18th century the forts helped protect Portugal from Spain and France! What do you think about traveling through one with the drone?🏰👨‍🏫

Characteristic of the military fort💂‍♂️🧭/ Característica del fuerte militar🚩

I love visiting these types of tourist attractions, in addition to the beautiful landscape that the hill above the city of Torres de Vedras gives us, we can enjoy another piece of Portuguese history, the fort was built between 1809 and 1810, normally despite being structures Very simple wars, there is a whole engineering behind the walls because some of them were built in the shape of stars to attack from all angles, however this one, having a Y shape, was with the objective of focusing the entire attack towards the Mediterranean. and the tajo river. The only purpose of a fort was to protect the capital of Lisbon!👨‍💻🧭💂‍♂️

Now I am using the drone for scientific purposes and it has turned out wonderfully, piloting it here is free and you do not need permission but be careful, I do not recommend raising it higher than 50 meters because there is an airfield very close! The advantage of using the drone for photographs is that at these angles we can see the details of the fort, such as the bridges that were mobile at the time, and we also see the traps that surrounded the fort and could place water or traps that would infect wounds.🏰🧠🧭

cannonball and trap🚩🏰💂‍♂️

Here we see original cannon balls that were found in the fort which tells us that some battles were fought between the walls probably against the French in the early 18th century, even if an enemy troop managed to evade the defensive line of the cannons they had to encounter With the troop of more than 2,000 soldiers, all with long-range weapons, to escape, the soldiers had to go through the traps that were a series of canals that surrounded the fort and if you fell there you probably wouldn't come out alive. The traps were connected with movable wooden bridges.👀

The fort had the capacity to place 39 canoes and more than 4 thousand soldiers, although in order not to waste resources there were almost always 2,200 in total, the fort of Sao Vicente was the first to be built to protect the center of the country and since the 18th century when it defeated the first battle against the French-Spanish, more than 170 were built around the defensive line. Among the construction plans of the structure there was already a chapel here dating from the 17th century and a ruin that apparently could be from the Moorish civilization. !🧠🚩👨‍🏫🧭

Just as the castles communicated with fire signals, the forts were already more sophisticated and had something called: (optical telegraph) this was a huge structure that served as a means of communication by codes in which two structures moved, the telegraphs. They were at the ends of the fort! We can see an example in the museum that is inside the fort, a shame that when I went it was closed!👨‍🏫🚩🧭
