Hello science addicts, I bring you a very interesting post because surely for the first time in the community we will see a dissection of a polychaete worm that belongs to the Nereididae family, they are characterized by being mostly marine, what is interesting about this species It is somewhat difficult to get it out of the beach sand with its capsule because they hide very quickly and extracting them from the capsule is also difficult without breaking them. Let's see some photographs of their anatomy and learn how their "organs" work.🧠🧫🔬
The genus Nereis🐛🔬/ El genero Nereis🧫🧠
These worms are fascinating and although they seem very simple in terms of anatomy and morphology, they are great survival machines and are quite resistant, many of them are almost all saltwater, and they can be found in different places on the beaches depending on the species and the food habitat this particular species seems to be a filter feeder but they range from herbivores to voracious predators! They are known to settle in a sac that they build themselves, they are difficult to identify and there is not much information on the internet about many species that today are a mystery! The post is more focused to see its anatomy.🧪🌏

This particular species builds its capsule with clay and other marine materials, and inside it forms a layer which we are seeing in the microscope, which is like a kind of silk that allows it to insulate, hold on, and protect itself inside the capsules! The capsules are uncovered at low tide and are never 100% submerged! so we could say that they are "semi-aquatic".🧫🔬

empty capsule🧠
These animals are characteristic because their body is full of setae and parapodia are used both for locomotion in the external environment and inside the capsule. In addition, these structures also carry out gas exchange since they do not have lung respiration because they are simple invertebrates! The setae that serve for transportation and movement are called "locomotor setae."👀

They all have a cylindrical shape and although many species are adapted to burrow in the sand, others have adaptations that help them cling to substrates, this is called: (posidonia), and some species even frequently gather in large groups.🤷♂️👨💻🔬
Anatomy🐛🔬/ Anatomia🧫🧠
These animals can measure from 5 to 30 centimeters, the anterior lobe is known as "prostomium" then we have the peristomium which has four "tentacles" they are hosmiotic meaning the pressure of their cells is equal to the external pressure, here unlike Other worms are "dioecious" there are males or females, there is external fertilization with haploid cells! Its digestive tract is a simple tube that is distributed throughout the body, in the middle we get a "stomach", finally the rectum and the anus where the excretion of matter takes place. The circulation is open and has blood vessels, gas exchange is through "gills" and body wall.🧫🔬
