Few people know this, but Portugal has a safari in Santiago do Cacém, an area of the Alentejo region where African animals roam freely. You can even board a train to observe their behavior as if you were actually on the African continent. Obviously, I prefer animals in their natural habitat, but if I had to choose between a zoo and this, I would choose a safari a thousand times over because the animals feel as if they are in their natural environment.📍🌍

I find it interesting that the Alentejo is practically a rather harsh and arid ecosystem. Within Badoka, they created lagoons which many animals typical of the surrounding area take advantage of—always available resources—to also inhabit the park; we could call them opportunistic species.🐯🦁

As with any safari, we will have the experience of boarding a shared train with other people to complete a 30-minute route through the park while observing each specimen of African animal. As I mentioned before, this is thanks to the environmental conditions of the Alentejo, which is very similar to the African savanna—cold at night and very hot during the day. However, we could not see predators in the park; it is not a safe environment for visitors or staff, so most are herbivores or omnivores.🌏🗺️

I want to tell you that the photos I'm showing you of the animals were taken with my telephoto lens, which is why they look close. However, the train is not authorized to approach these animals so as not to disturb them; they are very sensitive to noise. Personally, the most incredible part is when we get to the giraffes. They are very curious and playful animals. They tend to explore inside tourist cars, sometimes even moving your glasses or hats, haha. This one was feeding today. By the way, did you know that they sleep standing up? They barely rest—a maximum of two hours a day, taking short breaks—and they spend the rest of the day eating.🌏🌍
En lo personal, la parte más increíble es cuando llegamos a las jirafas. Son animales muy curiosos y juguetones; tienden a explorar dentro de los autos de los turistas, en ocasiones llegando a mover tus lentes o gorras, jeje. Esta de aquí hoy estaba alimentándose. Por cierto, ¿sabías que ellas duermen de pie? Apenas descansan un máximo de dos horas al día, tomando descansos cortos; el resto del tiempo se lo pasan comiendo.📍🚙
We took a walk through the park to interact with and learn about other animals, some from different continents. There are also domestic birds. The park features a variety of ecosystems that allow many of them to reproduce, like the ostriches in the photo. After watching some shows, we decided to eat, take another walk, and leave. On average, you spend about two to three hours in the park.🐯🦁
Después estuvimos dando un paseo por el parque para interactuar y aprender sobre otros animales, algunos de otros continentes del planeta. También hay aves domésticas.
