Boox Air 3C E-reader

Finally, after a bit of a delay in shipping due to me using a PO Box for deliveries... resulting in my delivery taking a bit of a tour of Australia and New South Wales before finally arriving into my lap.

Unlike my wife's e-reader, this was directly ordered from BOOX in their Hong Kong warehouse as his had the best combination deal compared to resellers in Australia. However, my wife's larger A4 format e-reader was over the 1000 AUD limit for dodging sales/import tax (another 10 percent) and so we ordered directly from a reseller in Australia for hers.

Mine was under the limit, and I've been eyeing the development of coloure-reader technology for quite a while... I've got lots of comics in digital form, but I've not really been keen to read them always on a fully fledged tablet LED screen due to the weight and battery limitations. Plus, I know that if I have a tablet with me, I'm more likely to watch TV instead. So, having an e-reader would be the perfect focussing device for comics, and if it was possible to have a slightly larger format with decent enough colour reproduction, this would be ideal!

... and the newly released Air 3C from Boox seemed to fit that bill!

Turning on the display, I was met with unexpected colour... not something that you expect from an e-reader... and of course, unlike LED screens, you don't have the same colour vibrancy... but again, that isn't the purpose!

The best thing about the Boox e-readers that partly justifies their premium pricing is the integration of a proper Android install.... which means that you have immediate access to the Play store and everything in it, just the same as if you had a regular tablet. In fact, if you really desired, you could play games and watch movies on this machine!

Mostly likely, I will use this for music, comics, and music scores.... I have other things for other uses!

Now, I was fretting about being able to dump files back and forth, but thankfully, they have set up a decent BooxDrop app. This allows for direct drops via LAN or the internet!

Phew... and it is fast! With a simple drag and drop interface!

There is some tweaking that needs to be done withe colour, vibrancy, and brightness settings. But when you are done, you do have a passable comic book reader with top battery life and the ability to view the entire page on a single screen!

Been looking for something like that, can you read and post properly with it?

You can, it is equivalent to a moderately powered Android tablet... however, you do have to keep in mind that the screen refresh rates of an e-reader is not going to be as quick as a LED screen! Or as vibrant...

Still very nice for reading online on the go. My IPhone 📱 Screen is killing me.

I totally have my eye on picking up the Boox color ereader. I currently have the Kobo Elipse 2E device, and while I like it, having a color option would be great since it's only uses black and shades of gray. I think the cost was a few hundred dollars, and the Boox is what, $500? However, it seems to be worth it for the dash of color and the other upgrades. I hope you enjoy it! :)

Yeah, the Boox is significantly more pricey... I do think that there are other brands starting to come out with colour versions with the same Kaleido 3 colour technology. For me, I really needed something that had proper Android support so that I could use it for music as well as a slow refresh tablet.

Never heard of these folks before but this looks interesting. Colour is definitely an attractive option and not something I get on my Kobo ereader. Also, didn't realise you can get A4 size ereader. I will check out these options, thanks.

A4 sized e-readers are pretty rare, but if you need to have documents (or in our case, sheet music) at 100 percent sizing, then they are quite useful... if expensive.

I love that you can read comics on this one. Makes me want to buy one even just for the sake of that feature!
