Agricultural system in Nigeria is poor.
Currently in Nigeria a custard paint of Garri ranges from 3,500 to 4,000 naira which is approximately 20 hive, the funny part is that Garri should be the least expensive food because is a common food for every Nigerian but it is now very expensive.
Beans is ranging from 5, 000 to 6,000 naira for a paint likewise rice all these are farm produce are from Nigeria and they are very expensive in same country that they are produced.
Now the family of six in Nigeria finds it very difficult to eat 2 square meal a day due to how expensive food stuff are in the market, and it is not getting better in any way.
Challenges facing the agricultural system of Nigeria.
My mom has been a farmer for over 20 years but currently she complains on how difficult it is to get farm produce and that is why they are very expensive let's look into some factors that made the difficult to harvest healthy farm produce.
Climate change.
Years back by February my mother have started planting corn and melon after 3 months they will be due for harvest but in the past two three years there have been no early rain that will help those crops to do well, even when they managed to do well birds that in search of water will destroy those crops making it very difficult to get farm produce in its time.
Soil Degradation.
I know of some farmland that my mother have been farming for over 20 years, this overuse have resulted to lack of farm produce, to get a good farm produce now from those overused farm it is very important to buy fertilizer that will help that will have those crops to do well.
Lack of support and resources.
There is no support from any government to the agricultural system of Nigeria, and like I said earlier overused farm requires fertilizer to get a good result, and those fertilizers are very expensive leading to farmers selling their produce at a high cost in order to cover up the expenses, most times there is no transportation to take those produce to the market, any form of transportation are very expensive.
There are no good roads to transport those farm produce to the city making it difficult for people in the city to get fresh food, no one cares about small scale farmers.
Most times it will take days or weeks before vegetables will be able to get to the city and when they get there sellers will dip them in water just to make them look fresh but they have lost lot of vitamins, a large quantity of those vegetables will have spoiled and be wasted leading to shortage of food supply.
Sadly I only enjoy fresh vegetables and fresh fruits when I travel to my village.
What can be done.
I think the Government have an important role to play on helping the agricultural system of Nigeria to improve which will result to more food in the market.
Government should try and produce resources like farming tools and fertilizers for small scale Farmers, they should also work on fixing those roads in the rural area to make it easier for food transportations which will help to avoid wasting of foods and promote easy supply of food.
Farmers need a training program on how to preserve food and vegetables to avoid food wastage, they can also be educated on how to adopt technology that will help them to improve in their farming.
Employing techniques like crop rotation and agro forestry can reduce overusing of lands and enhance farm produce from a healthy land.
Future prospect of food and agriculture.
Leveraging technology can improve food and technology in the future because artificial intelligence and machine learning and other technological equipment can as well help to manage farming and help to detect the right time to plant crops for good harvesting.
Everyone can have a little garden in their house which will help them to have some vegetables.
The health system can as well introduce a personalized diet to patients and this will help to reduce waste of food.
Conclusion.
Looking at the future is Nigerian government do not improve in the use of technology and render some help to small scale farmers, the rate of farmine and increase in health challenges due to lack of good food that will occur in Nigeria will be disasterous and can lead to war because people are becoming more aggressive day by day as they can not afford to buy food for themselves and their family.
It is a serious situation.
This thing with our agricultural system is nothing that can not be adequately managed. We need better enlightment and education on the trade, incentives for farmers, and good facilities.
There's too much felling of tress these days inorder that buildings be erect, so much that we have lesser and lesser farmlands to work on to feed the growing population. If all of these things could be looked into and given adequate attention, we wouldn't have to worry about scarcity and inflation.
