Lema quadripunctata

Lema quadripunctata, a type of leaf beetle from the family Chrysomelidae.

I saw this insect walking slowly on the surface of cassava leaves, perhaps looking for food or just resting. Some of the surrounding leaves appear to have holes, possibly the result of this insect or its relatives. Based on the information I read, Lema quadripunctata is known as a pest that often attacks cassava plants and several other plants.

When I brought the camera closer to take more detailed photos, this insect was silent for a moment, then suddenly dropped down. This may be a defense mechanism so that it is difficult for predators to find it. I waited a while, and finally he reappeared on one of the cassava stalks.

This observation is quite interesting to me because it shows how small insects like this can adapt to their environment. Additionally, its striking color may serve as a warning to predators that it is unpalatable or poisonous. I am happy to be able to document Lema quadripunctata in its habitat and share these findings with the community.

NOTE: I first wrote the article above in Indonesian, which is my own language, then I translated it using English with the help of Goggle.
