Roof top solar should be a mandatory thing for new homes
Real estate is having good demand near my area. I don't know if that is the case in other places and other countries as well. But people are either renovating their own house or purchasing a new flat. This has been the case everywhere. I see this as a good opportunity to enter the real estate market. A few years back this was not the case and people struggled to sell their flats and people also stayed away from real estate investments. But things are changing now. I also heard that people are able to purchase a house in the US for a cheap price compared to a few years back.
Real estate investments have started increasing everywhere I suppose. In addition to this people are also planning to have all the latest sophistication in their new homes. By default houses come with a security system installed and so many other automations and features. All modern technology is being used here. Solar implementation is also one such feature that can be considered by the engineers and civil planners.
Doesn't cost much
In my opinion, solar panels can be installed for a very decent price these days. Especially in a country like India, the efficiency of the panels are also very good. When someone is constructing a house by spending over 1 crore in India to build a house it wouldn't be too much to spend another 5 Lakh to create a setup that would power the house.
I understand that this technology needs improvement and there are so many parameters to be considered but things have changed a lot in the last few years and they are not as costly as how they used to be. People say that it is a one-time investment that would solve the power needs for a house and that would last for nearly 25 years if all goes well. Even in a case where the efficiency drops, additional panels can always be installed.
Solar Panels should be made cheaper
They are already cheaper. I understand that but it would be nice to get the panels at the price of a glass door we would install for our house. If the price of Solar panels and glass are the same, people would be interested to cover the entire house walls with solar panels. I believe the technology needs to be improved a little bit for more efficiency but that's a different story.
I'm sure there are possibilities to make the panels cheaper because the raw materials are cheap but the making cost is what is high. Every country should have a unit doing manufacturing. For example, we are importing Solar Panels from Germany. If India starts manufacturing their own solar panels, it would be an awesome thing and long-lasting growth.
When people are ready to spend so much on their new dream home, it is also nice if they could spend some more money to install a rooftop solar panel. Some governments and private parties even offer a cashback if they produce excess and share it back to the grid. In some places of India if someone is producing excess power, they would be able to accumulate credits and those credits can be used during the night time when they need power or during other days when the power consumption is high. With the help of this strategy, some people even make their electricity bills zero. It would be wise to explore these options.

It's happening in my country too. For us, it's mostly because the electricity company is breaking our hearts, so we run off to solar panels. It's an efficient power source compared to the noise neighbors have to bear every time individual power on their generator. So I support that the needful should be done to make it cheaper.
Oh generators are definitely not feasible and i think they are costly too. Solar is developing slow but definitely a viable option.
They are indeed costly. And the cost of fuel is on the high side too.
A viable option it is for us, because we have lots of sunlight.
Yes Sun light is the biggest advantage here.

Solar tech sucks, it takes 20 years to break even, by then you got to replace it. And that's if you don't live where there is snow and you got to spend hundreds/thousands each year to clean it off completely eliminating any savings.
There is much more efficient solar coming, but unless you live in an area where you can get a crazy amount of direct sun, you will be lucky to break even after 20 years.
I don't have solar, always wanted it, but that's how I have seen it based on the research I've done.
We have a crazy amount of direct Sunlight in India. Especially in the place I live, we have Sun Light for almost 350 days out of 365 days. lol.
Another biggest drawback here is that we have frequent power cuts due to overload and electricity is also a little costly if we go over a certain amount. People did some calculations and keep saying that we can break even in 6 years' time and anything after that is a bonus for us.
Now it is becoming a practice to set up Solar along with the construction so that the cost will not matter. We have to spend around 50k USD to build a house here. Spending 4k more will give our home free electricity. So, it is becoming a trend. 😉 I agree that this tech needs more advancements and many people who did innovations in this field are keeping the patent and not using them. We will also need innovations around Battery technology too.

Holy shit that's cheap.
I have a massive electricity bill (especially summer) so I've always wanted solar. I don't even mine at home, it is mostly central air, computing, and pool (no heater!). My average monthly bill went from $160/$300 in the Winter/Summer to $320/$650 due to electricity cost skyrocketing in the last year.
Solar here is $20K+ and more like $50K if you want battery storage. Potentially even more if you have high usage.
Oh wow, I guess it's all based on the cost of living in a country I guess. Our electricity bill is less than 100$ a month even during peak summer when we operate Air conditioners. Otherwise, it is only half of it. ( At least in my house. )
20k and 50k are way too much I would say. Even here solar panels are imported only from Germany. (The 440 Watts panel). In spite of that, the setup cost is not over 15k even for a highly sophisticated house. It has been over 6 months since my last inquiry. But in general, the cost to implement solar is only getting lower every year.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. We also get a government subsidy if we set up solar panels at home. That's the main reason why it is cheap to implement it.

Here in Pakistan also it is running very successfully with electricity and now people are doing it like this, they are doing whole solar system on rooftops. As much as electricity has become expensive here, if you guys don't do it like this, it will be very difficult to live.
The biggest advantage we have is the Sun light. Many western countries have the resources but dont have enough sun light.

The epoxy used? It's extremely volatile and dangerous. Just to make these unrecyclable solar panels you have to destroy your entire environment and that's exactly what China is doing because China is making how many of these?
Next up they are unrecyclable... So basically you just created a big huge pile of garbage just to save short term. Yeah....
That's not exactly how it works....
Absolutely we do need to harvest the Sun as well as other sustainable renewable resources... Like sustainable wood and fibers...
In fact you would do more for the environment by allowing cannabis to grow as weeds in your garden every year then to invest in a bunch of dangerous chemicals and epoxies that were used to make the solar panels which reduce your bill.

Yeah I have heard that. Even here panels that are older than 20 years are hard to dispose of and recycle.
The same applies to plastic utilities too that we are creating. I heard that China is one other country that doesn't care about plastics and they keep using plastics for everything.
Actually there's no way for you to recycle any solar panel. And the negative carbon footprint of a solar panel is absolutely exceptional. However I absolutely believe in technology. I've actually got my own solar systems two in fact.

Finding a way to make recyclable solar panels is going to be a huge step forward.
Yes we need more innovation around making it a recyclable product. But people and manufacturers don't care much because the lifetime of solar panels is 25 years or more.
Which is about break even when you calculate how much electricity you could have just purchased and used. Efficiency is key.
US does not have the correct incentives for solar to be worthwhile for commoners. So, good on India for making an effort to make it work for people.

There are cheaper ways to create efficient solar panels. But the problem is they are patented. We have to wait for that company to start producing solar panels.
I once read that the cost of a solar panel can be as cheap as the cost of a glass. This way people can just spend the money and cover their buildings with panels instead of glass. Especially commercial buildings.
We can hope. But, right now, it's not cost-effective for some folks around the globe.
