The Morse Telegraph

In 1837, the American Samuel Morse presented his famous invention – the Morse apparatus, or rather, the electromagnetic wire telegraph.

It was a revolution in the development of communications. Previously, telegraphs transmitted information using a complex system of magnetic arrows, while Morse made a telegraph that could write. With a manipulator or a key, any message could be tapped out, and it was displayed on a paper tape.

The demonstration took place at New York University. The signal was sent 500 meters away, but the received telegram turned out to be unreadable. That's when Morse and his companion Alfred Weil developed a special code that transmitted letters in short and long signals, combinations of dots and dashes. They called the code "Morse code".

The first telegraph line on such equipment was launched in 1844 in the USA, connecting the cities of Washington and Baltimore.

By the way, Samuel Morse was a certified artist, painted portraits and only at the age of 42 took up science and technology, and the inventor's paintings are highly appreciated today.
