[PL/EN] Czytaj z Marcinem 11/2024 - "Atlas ryb północnego Atlantyku" ('The Atlas of the North Atlantic Fish'), praca zbiorowa
| Marcin jest stworzeniem rybolubnym, co pewnie już zauważyliście po tym, że opisuję sporo książek o tej tematyce. Dziś się pojawia kolejna (i prawdopodobnie ostatnia na jakiś dłuższy czas, choć kto wie?). Jest to „Atlas ryb Północnego Atlantyku” z 1970 roku wydany przez Wydawnictwo Morskie z Gdańska. Polowałem na nią już od dłuższego czasu, jednak obecnie jest to książka rzadka (nakład tego wydania - 2000 egzemplarzy, prawdopodobnie nie było wznowień), w dodatku najczęściej odstraszała cena – powyżej 100 zł, przy czym widywałem i oferty w wysokości dwukrotnie wyższej. Aż tu pewnego dnia trafiła się okazja – jedyne 60 zł. Decyzja była mogła być tylko jedna – choć brakowało obwoluty. |
Martin is a fish-loving creature, as you may have noticed from the fact that I review quite a few books on the subject. Today sees the publication of another one (and probably the last for some time, but who knows?). It is ‘The Atlas of the North Atlantic Fish’ from 1970, published by the Maritime Publishing House from Gdańsk. I had been looking for this book for a long time, but nowadays it is rare (there were 2,000 copies of this edition, probably no reprints), and besides, the price was usually a deterrent - over 100 zlotys (about $25), but I also saw offers for twice that amount. Then one day I came across a bargain - only 60 zlotys (about $15). There was only one decision to be made - even though the cover was missing. |
| Książka zdecydowanie przerosła moje oczekiwania już od pierwszego rzutu oka. Przede wszystkim zaskoczył mnie jej rozmiar. Spodziewałem się tomu może i dość grubego, ale rozmiarem zbliżonego do przeciętnej książki, jakiegoś B5, powiedzmy. Tymczasem otrzymałem parokilogramową księgę formatem przekraczającą A4, co zarazem w znacznej części było odpowiedzią w kwestii adekwatności cen. Resztę tej odpowiedzi przyniosła zawartość książki. |
At first glance, the book definitely exceeded my expectations. First of all, I was surprised by its size. I expected it to be quite thick, but about the size of an average book, say some B5. What I got was a book that weighed several kilos and was over A4, which was also the most part of the answer as far as price was concerned. The rest of the answer came from the content of the book. |
| Książka na rynku polskim pionierska, mająca związek z rozwojem rybołówstwa w Polskiej Republice Ludowej. Zawiera opisy 400 gatunków występujących w wodach Północnego Atlantyku (od Arktyki po tropikalne akweny wybrzeży Afryki i Karaibów), spośród których prawie 300 było do tego momentu na tyle obcych polskiej ichtiologii, że nie miały nawet polskich nazw. Trudno więc przecenić wkład tej pozycji w rozwój polskiej nauki. Ale czytelnik znajdzie też opisy ryb dobrze znanych z Bałtyku i polskich sklepów. |
The book was a pioneering work on the Polish market, and was connected with the development of fisheries in the People's Republic of Poland. It contains descriptions of 400 species living in the waters of the North Atlantic (from the Arctic to the tropical basins of the African and Caribbean coasts), almost 300 of which were so alien to Polish ichthyology at the time that they did not even have Polish names. It is therefore difficult to overestimate the contribution of this position to the development of Polish science. However, the reader will also find descriptions of well-known fish from the Baltic Sea and Polish shops. |
| Konstrukcja książki jest dość typowa dla tego rodzaju publikacji. Zaczynamy od kilkunastu stron opisujących ryby od strony ich budowy fizjologicznej | The structure of the book is quite typical for this type of publication. We begin with a dozen pages describing fish from the point of view of their physiological structure |
| oraz ocean jako ich środowisko życia. Następnie ok. 20 stron taksonomicznych i kolejne 40 indeksu i słowników nazw ryb w różnych językach. | and the ocean as their habitat. This is followed by about 20 pages of taxonomy and another 40 pages of an index and dictionaries of fish names in various languages. |
| A potem już część szczegółowa, czyli opisy poszczególnych gatunków – każdy otrzymał dla siebie całą stronę, na której znajdziemy ilustrację przedstawiającą daną rybę, informacje jej dotyczące – opis wyglądu i rozmiarów, zasięg występowania (uzupełniony adekwatną mapą), dane o trybie życia oraz to, co użytkownika końcowego, być może, interesuje najbardziej, czyli – czy daną rybę można zjeść, a jeśli tak, to gdzie i jak jest łowiona. Do tego nazwy w językach lokalnych regionów jej występowania. |
Then there are the detailed descriptions of the individual species, each of which has a full page with an illustration of the fish, information about the fish - a description of its appearance and size, its range (supplemented by a map), data on its way of life and what the end user might be most interested in, i.e. whether the fish can be eaten and, if so, where and how they are caught. Also the names in the local languages of the regions where it occurs. |
| Oceniając, nie ma się do czego przyczepić. Merytorycznie wszystko się zgadza i jest poprawne (no może poza nazwami ryb w językach afrykańskich, ale tego nie mam za bardzo jak zweryfikować) |
In terms of evaluation, there is nothing to complain about. From a content point of view, everything is correct (with the possible exception of the names of the fishes in African languages, but I have no way of checking this) |
| od strony wizualnej – też wszystko w jak najlepszym porządku, ilustracje spełniają wszelkie standardy swojej epoki (choć dziś, prawdopodobnie, zostałyby zastąpione kolorowymi zdjęciami). Na aktualności straciły jedynie dane o wysokości połowów i, zapewne – o temperaturze wody poszczególnych regionów oceanicznych, ze względu na postępujące ocieplenie klimatu. |
from a visual point of view, everything is in order, the illustrations meet all the standards of their time (although today they would probably be replaced by colour photographs). Only the data on the volume of catches and, presumably, on the water temperature of the various regions of the ocean, due to the progressive warming of the climate, have lost their relevance. |
| Ostatecznie przyznaję ocenę bardzo dobrą (8 na 10), z zastrzeżeniem jednak, że pomimo swej wysokiej jakości, książka będzie budzić zainteresowanie wyłącznie wąskiej grupy docelowej – ichtiologów, rybaków dalekomorskich oraz takich rybnych wariatów, jak ja. | My final rating is very good (8 out of 10), with the caveat that, despite its high quality, the book will only be of interest to a narrow audience - ichthyologists, deep-sea fishermen and fish freaks like me. |
