We accept war as part of us
Nuestra falencia constante nos ha llevado a creer que no podemos ser algo diferente y potencialmente mejor a lo que somos como especie humana. Creemos que es natural luchar entre nosotros mismos por hacer cumplir nuestro deseos y más niñezcos caprichos. A veces consumimos más de lo que necesitamos y dejamos a otros desposeídos. Lo peor de todo esto es que se suele pensar que no hay remedio para esta realidad, que estamos condenados a sufrir las desavenencias de nuestra naturaleza, nos resignamos estupidamente a ser mediocres. Pero yo creo que no debe ser así, y en este post les explico por qué.
Our constant failure has led us to believe that we cannot be something different and potentially better than what we are as a human species. We believe it is natural to fight among ourselves to fulfill our desires and most childish whims. Sometimes we consume more than we need and leave others deprived. The worst thing about all this is that we tend to think that there is no remedy for this reality, that we are condemned to suffer the inconveniences of our nature, we resign ourselves stupidly to be mediocre. But I believe it should not be so, and in this post I explain why.
Ayer discutíamos sobre el enfoque liberal y el enfoque constructivista en mi clase de Estudio Teórico de las Relaciones Internacionales. Nuestra profesora nos explicaba que para el liberalismo lo más importante era la realización del individuo a través de la comunidad, desde un punto de vista racional toma en cuenta la convivencia en las relaciones internacionales. Para el constructivismo, lo más importante son las normas, puesto que éstas son un constructo generalizado por la aceptación de la moral popular, se concentra en las instituciones y leyes que hacen posible la convivencia internacional.
A pesar de lo explicado, nuestra profesora hizo una afirmación perturbadora: ninguno de estos enfoques son suficientes para explicar las relaciones internacionales, porque siguen existiendo las guerras, y según los dos enfoques no deberían existir. Desde un plano más filosófico, mi profesora afirmó: "Los seres humanos siempre tendremos anhelos y necesidades qué satisfacer, y esto siempre será causa de conflicto en la humanidad". La anarquía es inevitable, y se hace necesaria la coerción de los actores para que no se maten entre sí, una policía internacional.
Yesterday we were discussing the liberal approach and the constructivist approach in my Theoretical Study of International Relations class. Our professor explained to us that for liberalism the most important thing was the realization of the individual through the community, from a rational point of view it takes into account coexistence in international relations. For constructivism, the most important thing is the norms, since these are a generalized construct due to the acceptance of popular morality; it concentrates on the institutions and laws that make international coexistence possible.
Despite what was explained, our teacher made a disturbing statement: none of these approaches are sufficient to explain international relations, because wars continue to exist, and according to both approaches they should not exist. On a more philosophical level, my teacher said: "Human beings will always have longings and needs to satisfy, and this will always be a cause of conflict in humanity". Anarchy is inevitable, and it becomes necessary to coerce the actors so that they do not kill each other, an international police force.
A pesar de esta visión realista, nuestra profesora también nos dio la pista de una posible solución a nuestro problema de convivencia con la siguiente frase: "para los humanos la evolución es social, no es natural". Lo que quiso decir con esto, es que los seres humanos han evolucionado socialmente principalmente, y esta evolución ha dejado muy atrás la evolución natural, propia de cualquier especie animal, que suele cambiar la apariencia física.
De esta manera, si es nuestra sociedad la que puede evolucionar y no nosotros como tal, es lógico pensar que nuestro siguiente paso evolutivo, está hacia la utilización generalizada y masiva de la tecnología, incluso en la administración pública y supranacional. Sin embargo, el problema va mucho más allá, puesto que incluso con Estados y organizaciones como la ONU la anarquía reina en el mundo, y es peor aún cuando los seres humanos a cargo de estas organizaciones se corrompen y las usan para sus propios fines.
Despite this realistic view, our teacher also gave us a hint of a possible solution to our problem of coexistence with the following sentence: "for humans evolution is social, not natural". What she meant by this is that humans have evolved mainly socially, and this evolution has left far behind the natural evolution, typical of any animal species, which usually changes physical appearance.
Thus, if it is our society that can evolve and not us as such, it is logical to think that our next evolutionary step is towards the generalized and massive use of technology, even in public and supranational administration. However, the problem goes much further, since even with States and organizations such as the UN, anarchy reigns in the world, and it is even worse when the human beings in charge of these organizations corrupt themselves and use them for their own ends.
La conclusión más lógica que puedo brindar es que los seres humanos no deberían gobernar otros seres humanos, y si combinamos esto con el uso de la tecnología, podríamos obtener como resultado un gobierno de Inteligencia Artifical. La ciencia ficción le ha dado mala fama al tema, pero lo cierto es que en nuestros tiempos esta idea no es tan descabellada, porque en efecto una IA se centraría en administrar equitativamente, sin instintos animales de por medio que la corrompan. Algo es seguro, la tecnología posibilita que tengamos gobiernos más abiertos y por tanto justos, y es por eso que nuestra evolución será altamente tecnológica.
The most logical conclusion I can draw is that human beings should not govern other human beings, and if we combine this with the use of technology, we could have an Artificial Intelligence government as a result. Science fiction has given the subject a bad name, but the truth is that in our times this idea is not so far-fetched, because in effect an AI would focus on administering fairly, without animal instincts to corrupt it. One thing is for sure, technology makes it possible for us to have more open and therefore fairer governments, and that is why our evolution will be highly technological.
