Scattering Beauties — Why are Sky blue and reddish and Clouds dark and White?

Hello StemSocial Community! Welcome to my blog. Today, I have decided to share one of the most important Light Phenomena by Optic Physics that has a big role in our life. Light has Dual Nature. It can act like particle and can act like a Wave. Its participle nature is due to Photons that are Energy Packets. My today write up only focus on its Wave Nature. Its looked white to us. It is the mixture of Seven Colors I.e Violet, Blue, Green, Orange, Indigo and Red. These all colors varied in Energy as well as in Wavelength.

What is Scattering?

Scattering is the deviation of waves (Light, Sound and Other Electromagnetic waves) from its straight path due to Deflection or Diffusible Effect of other particles. It is very common phenomenon happening in our life when we talk about waves. It has following types.

  • Elastic Scattering (Energy and wavelength remains constant after scattering)
  • Inelastic Scattering (Energy and wavelength varied after Scattering)

We can see the scattering of light in our daily life during writing, reading and vision. Now one amazing question regarding scattering is given below.

Why is sky blue at daytime during clear weather?

This is very interesting question regarding scattering. It was asked from my sibling who is in 9th Grade. To fully answer this question, I have to read different research articles as well as information from different websites that I have shared below.

Sunlight emits white light that is dispersed into seven colors by different water droplets found in our atmosphere. These droplets act like Natural Prism and divides light into seven colors.

Prism is Crystalize structure that performs light Dispersion. You can make this prism at your home with help of following material.

  • Cupboard
  • White Sheet
  • Glass
  • Water
  • Pencil

By above material, you can make a prism easily and can observe all seven colors that appeared in Rainbow on the white paper sheet. For detailed procedure, I have shared one detailed documents at the end of this post.

Anyway all these seven colors dispersed due to atmospheric particles (molecules, dust) are interrupted by following physical phenomena.

  • Reflection
  • Bending
  • Scattering

Scattering is inversely proportional to the the wavelength. Blue and violet colors have shortest wavelength and greatest scattering. Our rod and cone cells are more sensitive for blue color, hence this color is perceived more predominantly than violet color in our eyes. Due to stronger scattering, sky looked blue during daytime on sunny weather.

Why is sky reddish during sunset?

When sun is lower at its setting time into the west. Sky looked reddish because all blue light is scattered with atmospheric particles while orange and red waves passed straight into our eyes. Hence, sky is reddish during dust time.

Why Clouds looked white on the sky?

There are several types of clouds on the basis of water crystals. When there is no absorption of wave energy, then white light from sun passes straight into our eyes. Hence, white clouds appeared due to elastic Scattering. In the reverse case, if light waves energy is absorbed then dark and white clouds appeared due inelastic scattering.

This post is all about Why is sky blue and reddish while clouds are dark and white in different weather conditions? I hope, you have perceived the reasoning behind it. These all happened due to one of the beautiful optical phenomena called Scattering. I hope, you have enjoyed my post. Thanks!

Another good question answered! One of these days I was explaining that to my kids hehehe we had a beautiful orange sky. It is interesting in here also, when there is smoke from wildfires the sky also changes to an orange color because of the components of the air...sad thing but still is nice to observe.

I think when you were giving lesson to your kids, I was listening everything in lurking 😂. Yeah sometimes pollution can be source of orange sky. Thank you for support and adding more information.
