Trying Gesture on My Figure Drawing

IMG_20230821_230353.jpg
I am currently reading a figure drawing book by Steve Houston, an artist I admire his figure drawings/paintings so much. In the book, I learnt about structure and gesture and I decided to try it out in this recent drawing of mine.
I found a reference that has a good flow of gesture, I used my neutral charcoal to sketch then I switched to graphite for shading. Shading with graphite pencil was cool on the paper but there was no much friction which left me thinking of how I can get a toned paper so that I will be able to place highlights with my white pencil.
How do you see this work?

That's interesting, I already checked you out when you introduced yourself in the FreeCompliments community. I like skating too (rollerblades) though I haven't done that in some years now. Hoping to learn skateboarding someday too.
