Pomato: The Crazy Plant That Grows Both Tomatoes AND Potatoes at the Same Time
Can you believe that one plant can grow both tomatoes and potatoes? Like, what?! It sounds completely insane, but welcome the Pomato (also called TomTato), a hybrid that literally grows tomatoes above the ground and potatoes below the ground on the same plant.
This isn't science fiction; it's all possible thanks to grafting, a gardening technique that goes back to the 1800s. Essentially, they graft together a tomato and potato plant because they are closely related. However, only recently, since 2013, has it become a commercial product, with companies in New Zealand and the UK selling them.
And the best thing? You get to harvest two crops from one plant! The tomatoes grow in summer while the potatoes develop underground throughout the summer months. For someone with limited space, like a small garden, balcony, or just a small packing compound; this is incredible.
There's also a plus: grafting makes the roots more immune to diseases so you don't have to use as much pesticides.
Of course, taking care of two different crops (potatoes and tomatoes) on the same plant can be a challenge, but to be honest, the combination of old-fashioned gardening with new technology is just fantastic.
