When The Kids Aren't Alright was released in 1998, The Offspring was already one of the most popular punk bands in the world and one of the most listened to in the United States. The single topped the charts, selling more than 15 million copies. It was also later named one of the 50 greatest punk albums of all time.

The Kids Are Not Alright is a song about American youth at the time. It turns out that the beautiful American dream plunged society into a deep recession in the late 1990s.

The song was inspired by Dexter Holland's childhood trips to Garden Grove, Orange County. There he learned that many of his old friends had met tragic fates. Most of them died in car accidents or suffered nervous breakdowns and severe depression, after which he was amazed by what he discovered and decided to write a song.

In it, he tells the deadly story of four (probably fictional) neighborhood youths: Jamie, Mark, Jay, and Brandon. I am pregnant with my first child and I have to leave university. Another is a guitarist addicted to marijuana. A third person commits suicide and the last victim dies of an overdose. The subtext of the single continues the group's American streak, which contains harsh criticism of American society.

Here we focus on teenagers, the dangers they face in life and the fact that few people can achieve their dreams and are lost in society.

A promotional video for "Kids Ain't Good" was released a month before the album's release, and MTV (at a time when it was still a serious channel and not filled with house shows) made it a large part of its programming.

Directed by Yariv Gaber, it combines group scenes in a single room where a series of characters and actions take place, many of which are digitally rendered by computer. In this room we can see the history of abandonment of the family or other actions at different times.

In the center of the room there is a stage where different people perform stereotyped gestures and movements, and sometimes members of the same group appear. For reference, this video was nominated for "Best Director" at the MTV Video Music Awards.
