Our Temporal Battle against Brambles

avatar
(Edited)

Hello dear Hivers ! It's been quite a while since I've had a chance to be active here and I must say I've missed it !

This is the time we've had to spend in the city rather than in the country, and I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to those who haven't replied in the comments.

IMG_1846.JPG

But now the battle is on again, and this time it's against the last clump of brambles ! I'm talking about a time battle because it's a bit like a long-distance race, as these and other plants grow incredibly fast.

IMG_1854.JPG

Fortunately, we are able to intervene at just the right time, because autumn and winter slow down their growth, making it easier to prune them and limit regrowth...

IMG_1849.JPG

This is one of the areas I set about clearing on a rainy morning...

IMG_1856.JPG

Here, all I've got is a simple pair of shears and, of course, a good pair of gloves !

IMG_1861.JPG

And here's the result some time later ! One of the things we still have to do is uproot the whole thing and, as there are about 150 to 200 square meters, I have to admit I'm hesitant to call in someone with a power tiller ! It's not a good idea to turn over the soil, but I think that in just a few hours it could be completely uprooted !

IMG_2091.JPG

IMG_2069.JPG

And here, the next day, the last hedge had fallen down ! But don't worry, I've kept a small bush so we'll have blackberries next year !

IMG_2096.JPG

IMG_2094.JPG

This operation is not far from being finished, but we still have to uproot...! And you have to think of it as a sort of conquest: each area planted will be one less to maintain !

But as always, we'll keep you posted ! And I hope you've enjoyed this article and the progress we've made :)

Thank you for taking the time to visit us, and have a good day,

<3

Bonjour chers Hivers !

<3

Hey, why do you need to get rid of the brambles? Do you not like blackberries? 😅

Haha, of course we love them, but we also need to find an better equilibrium to plant more diverse vegetables 😅 ! The garden has been neglected for several years and if we don't do something about it, in one or two years it'll all be covered up !

Yeah they grow pretty fast, you can also just put some big logs on top of the ones you want to take down, saves effort and created good soil on spot;)

I will probably play like you're suggesting hehe 😅

There is just too much to uproot !

Thanks @fenngen, have a lovely day 😀

O wow, @anttn - this seems like a very nice clump of relatively easy-to-chop-back brambles! I was just last night getting into the thick of the jungley mass which is in the lower part of Sergio's garden: it is intensely packed with vitalba, bindweed and brambles, parietaria, and some epic-large grasses... I'm cutting around the edges first, if I can, just like along your fence and hedges here; there is SO MUCH more to do, but it feels incredibly satisfying, eh!
Buon lavoro, 😍

Ah yes, there are times when you just can't get enough of the details ! As you say, you have to go at it like an explorer in the jungle, with a machete ! But it's so satisfying and it's future organic matter, and that's worth its weight in gold !

Have a nice day 😘

Cleaning wild plants or weeds with simple scissors will take a bit of time & effort, I sometimes use pesticides to help speed things up. But this is certainly not environmentally friendly :)

Ah, pesticides ! No 😅 haha !

I prefer to go by hand and mechanical method for now !

Thank you @dimascastillo90 :))

Yeah, we're doing well, just got back here and Hive and in the country house 😀

How are you doing on your side ?

Take good care dear 😘

Damn, what a job! My experience of taking out such invasive plants is that a tiller will damage the roots but not remove them and the small pieces will grow again. These need to be taken out carefully by hand, making sure it's all gone. Then you will spend a couple of seasons pulling out germinating seeds

In fact, I told me the same thing about the tiller afterwards... We will probably just go by hand and with mechanical methods :)

Thank you for your advices here @nikv 😊

Take care and have a lovely day ✌️

Brambles are just such awful things, and they sometimes seem to grow several meters a day! I had to clear a huge thicket of them as part of our vegetable garden expansion, so I can imagine what you went through.

Yeah, despite the fact that their fruits are delicious, their growth is maybe too much impressive as you said..!

But we'll overcome... after a lot of work haha !

Hey @anttn. Hope you are well. Getting the roots out is quite effective too!
