It seems like a no-brainer, and in fact it is ! Of course, it doesn't have to be just any wood...
Hello dear Hivers ! I hope you're all well. Today I'd like to show you my wood preparation stand, which we already had on site. This is the wood left to us by the previous owners...
But what is the right wood to get the best combustion and therefore the best heat ?
The first choice is, of course, oak, which is pretty much at the top of the podium. It's a dense, solid wood with a very good combustion coefficient.
It's generally recommended not to burn too much or only softwood, but this highlights an essential factor. This is the moisture content of the wood being burnt. In general, wood takes 3 to 5 years to dry out properly, so a well-dried pine or fir will pose much less of a problem than green wood or wood that has only been cut recently.
It's important not to burn green wood, as this produces liquid soot that can accumulate in the flue and start fires in the flue itself.
Another piece of advice I've been given on several occasions is to mix different types of wood ! This produces more complete combustion and I'm going to end this advice based on my young experience with a list of the best woods according to less.
- Oak. Dense and takes time to burn.
- Beech. Like oak but a little less dense.
- Elm.
- Cherry and plum woods. Dense and good for heating.
- Birch. A white wood that burns well and quickly.
- And finally, pine and fir, which burn quickly and are therefore perfect for starting fires.
But here's my little corner of the garage where I've started to indulge in the healthy activity of preparing fuel...
And here's one of the piles of logs being "processed".
In other words, either I cut them on this bench so that they can fit into the stove...
Or I split them to reduce their diameter and thickness. To do this, I use this wide axe, a merlin, a series of iron wedges or this small hatchet, which is sometimes all that's needed.

Bonjour chers Hivers ! J'espère que vous allez bien. Aujourd'hui, je vous montre un peu mon stand de préparation du bois que nous avions déjà sur place. C'est le bois que nous on laissé les précédents propriétaires...
Mais quel est donc le bon bois pour obtenir les meilleures combustions et donc chaleurs ?
Le premier est bien-sûr le chêne qui est un peu sur la première marche du podium. C'est un bois dense, solide et qui a un très bon coefficient de combustion.
On recommande généralement de ne pas brûler trop ou seulement des résineux, mais cela vient mettre en lumière un facteur essentiel. C'est le taux d'humidité du bois que l'on brûle. En général, le bois met de 3 à 5 ans à bien sécher et pour le coup du pin ou du sapin bien sec posera bien moins de problème que du bois vert ou coupé depuis peu de temps.
En effet, il ne faut surtout pas brûler de bois vert, car cela produit une suie liquide qui risque de s'accumuler dans le conduit et peut produire des départs de feu au sein même du conduit et alors provoquer des incendies.
Un autre conseil que l'on m'a donné à plusieurs reprises, c'est de mélanger les essences de bois ! En effet, cela produit des combustions plus complètes et je vais terminer ces quelques conseils basés sur ma jeune expérience par une liste des meilleurs bois selon moins.
- Le chêne. Dense et prend du temps pour brûler.
- Le hêtre. Comme le chêne mais un peu moins dense.
- L'orme.
- Les bois de cerisiers et pruniers. Dense et bien calorifère.
- Le bouleau. Un bois blanc qui brûle bien et vite.
- Et enfin, le pin et le sapin qui brûlent vite et sont donc parfait pour commencer le feu.
Mais voilà mon petit coin dans le garage où j'ai commencé à m'adonner à cette saine activité qui est celle de préparer son combustible...
Et voici un des tas de bûches en "cours de traitement".
C'est à dire que soit je recoupe celles-ci sur ce banc de coup pour qu'elle puissent rentrer dans le poêle...
Soit je les refends pour diminuer leur diamètre et épaisseur... Pour cela, j'utilise cette hache large, un merlin, une série de coins en fer ou cette petite hachette qui suffit parfois.

Pour éclater les buches, j'ai investi dans un coin vrillé: l'intérêt c'est qu'il ne reste que très exceptionnellement coincé dans le bois et il vient à bout de toutes les buches sauf les noeuds mais là... c'est normal.
Dépense de 30-35€ mais ça vaut la dépense en temps gagné.
Pour initier le feu, je prends du bois de charme.
L'acacia est extrêmement calorifère.
J'évite le pin et le sapin : ils goudronnent ton conduit donc il faut augmenter les ramonages pour éviter les feux de cheminée.
Le cerisier et le merisier ce sont des fruitiers donc 4 ans de séchage avant utilisation.

I love a real wood log fireplace, it feels so cosy and extra warm.

My husband was chopping some wood for our fireplace in the garden and it was such a hard work. Luckily, we are not dependent on the fireplace as we decided that next time we will simply buy it 😂

Nice set up. Pine cones are nice as fire starters. Plenty of oaks here and some pine trees too plus an occasional fruit tree. It's harder to get wood that has been properly dried out though.
I literally started my first fire, today, as it has started getting 'water cold' and three weeks of rain and little sun became a little too much to handle for my low-fat body type.
