And that's it, we've Planted our very First Trees on the plot for the future Garden Forest !

avatar

Hello dear Hivers, I hope you've had a lovely weekend and that the week is off to a good start for you !

For our part, we've been busy surveying the 957 square meters of land that we'd like to dedicate to a garden forest, an assemblage of different species designed to create a kind of super-organism that's fertile, productive in terms of food, good for biodiversity and resilient in the face of climatic hazards.

IMG_2074.JPG

So no, they're not chestnut trees - those will come later - but two little cherry trees that I found at a local nursery. One is in a pot and the other is semi-bare root, with just a little soil in its green plastic bag.

IMG_2394.JPG

IMG_2393.JPG

But before planting them like that, we took the time to study the terrain and that too took an extra day. Or should I say several days, as we'd already been thinking about it for some time !

IMG_2489.JPG

IMG_2488.JPG

IMG_2487.JPG

I don't know if you can see them very well, but we've planted a whole series of hazel stakes in different places where we'd like to have trees. We put an average of 5 meters between each tree, but the idea of the garden forest is to play on exposure and the creation of micro-climates. That's why I think that in the end there will probably be more trees, and much closer together...

But for the moment, we've put in about thirty of these stakes, which are supposed to represent the future trees !

And here are the first holes being dug with that magnificent tool, the spading fork ! We dug them deep enough and, dare I say it, here come the trees !

We form a trough with some of the excavated earth to retain the watering and we repeat the operation for the second cherry tree...

IMG_2407.JPG

At the end, we water generously so that the soil is in good contact with the roots and we also mulch generously so that the soil isn't bare and the water stays longer.

It's worth pointing out that we're in Normandy and that it rains a lot in this region, so there's not much risk of drought !

IMG_2081.JPG

IMG_1995.JPG

These are the two species we planted, bearing in mind that it's always better to plant two trees of the same species, as they pollinate each other and produce better harvests !

IMG_1994.JPG

And finally, here's this future chestnut tree that we'd love to plant next time, so that in a few years' time we'll be able to harvest these delicious fruits on our land !

I hope you've enjoyed this article and the information it contains! I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read it, and encourage you to ask any questions you may have and provide any useful details :)

Good day to you all and see you soon,

<3

<3

Great man, we had cherries in our garden and they will probably be ready to give you fruit in the next harvest season. I've never seen a chestnut tree, I'm looking forward to seeing it from you.

I never knew that this is how trees are planted
I thought that people will plant them as seeds first
I'm happy to learn that

Yes, my love, this is very similar to what I was telling you recently. They are going to create a small forest here, it's wonderful, I wish we had a plot like this.

And this is what I was thinking, the idea of carrying seedlings and picks and shovels in our car all the time and scattering trees on the side of the road where we stop, without damaging anyone's fields, maybe we could have a tree in every corner of the country is a very nice idea.
