A Visual and Passionate Chestnut Story
If you asked me to choose one of my favorite things about this autumn season, I'd answer without hesitation : chestnuts !
Wherever I go, it's a fruit that's always been with me, and perhaps with good reason as I come from regions where they've been grown and eaten for centuries.
I've found myself picking chestnuts in St James Park in London, in Italy, and all over France. In short, if it's the right time of year and there's a forest around, you can count on me to go out and try to find this wonderful fruit !
So I was delighted and surprised to discover that the Perche region of Normandy, where we recently settled, has acidic, sandy soil where you can find chestnut trees !
These pictures are no tribute to this fruit that I love so much, but as I was already fully loaded on this week's train, I didn't take my camera with me. Fortunately, you can be sure that it will be with me next time !
In the end, it was the light at the end of the day that illuminated the edge of the table and my plate of chestnuts that I wanted to immortalise. But more than taking pictures of these fruits, what I love is picking them and then preparing them.
The harvest takes place in the forest, under one or more chestnut trees, and it's like a treasure hunt! The more you find, well... the more you find! I love this tree and this fruit because it is so tasty and, at the same time, it has helped large parts of the population to get through periods of famine.
Then it's time to prepare them, by simply rinsing them in water and splitting them with a knife, and then cooking them ! You can do this in the oven, in a frying pan or simply over a fire !
This is the option we chose this time to enjoy our freshly picked chestnuts from the previous day. We didn't realize it yet, but the end of this barbecue session ended in the rain.
Chestnuts waiting in the dry until the embers are ready to start cooking...
And this is surely the worst image in terms of the quality of this report! It was raining and dark at the time, all lit up by torchlight - could it have been better ?
The fact remains that we enjoyed ourselves ! Not only do you get to taste them, but you also have to peel them while they're still red-hot, and that too is something of an art in itself...
But what could be the best way to take full advantage of these gifts of Nature? Of course, it's to plant a few chestnuts in the hope that they will sprout and be planted so that, in a few years' time, you can reap a hundredfold from this simple, tasty and self-sufficient fruit.
Need I add that this fruit is gluten-free, and can also be boiled, preserved, made into flour and, in some varieties, eaten raw ?
As you can see, of all the joys of autumn, I prefer chestnuts !
Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this article written by a true enthusiast :)
Have a lovely day everyone, and take care,

<3

Hahah, your love for chestnut, I admire it 😊. I can imagine the exciting you feel when you find them in the forest. Suggesting to grow more of chestnut trees is a great sustainable idea which will go a long way for everyone. There is this quote in my dialect: "With more trees, life is easier". Also the chestnuts looks so fresh and appealing. Beautiful!
Now I know something you love. Hope you are doing okay?

Chesnutes! Apart from the beautiful colours of the autumn foliage, chestnuts are also one of my favourite things that autumn brings!
I have to tag here @ph1102 as he wanted to prepare roasted chestnuts yesterday evening :))
Those are so simple and beautifully complex at the same time, I really enjoy this season for this in particular :)
We found the right tool to roast them, I believed so, but apparently, it doesn't work on our electric fire... Nooo !
I hope you're doing well dear @mipiano 😘

These are definitely my favorites too, man. Nothing beats the flavor of those chestnuts you cook on the stove after coming home on a cold day. They are not ripe in Turkey yet, but I am sure I will be eating plenty of them in a month haha.
I am completely found of those fruits and happy that you too 😇 !
Now you must be counting the days before the chestnuts season !!
Have a good day dear @incublus 😘
Thanks have a nice one too!
✌️
I've never had chestnuts and I don't know how it tastes
It will be nice
I can tell from the colour
It's very specific and simple at the same time ! But it's difficult to name an approaching fruit :)
Anyway, it's simply delicious !!!
