The Pluto binary system

The Pluto binary system is characterised by the gravitational interaction between Pluto and Charon, which orbit around a common point called the barycentric centre of mass.

Charon's mass is about one eighth of Pluto's mass, which causes both bodies to revolve around this point.

This binary relationship between Pluto and Charon is unique in our solar system and gives us the opportunity to study the dynamics of binary systems and how these bodies interact with each other.

In addition to Charon, Pluto has four other known moons: Hydra, Nix, Kerberos and Styx.

Each of these moons has its own orbit around Pluto and contributes to the complexity of the system.

It is fascinating how binary systems like Pluto's allow us to better understand the formation and evolution of objects in space.
